Dennis couldn’t accept this outcome. He clenched his jaw and spoke with determination. “We have to develop the antidote on time, even if we can only manage it in stages, even if all we can do is buy Camila some more time. However many people you need, I’ll find them. Whatever funding it takes, I’ll make it happen. If the team isn’t good enough, I’ll hunt down the best experts in the world. I just have one condition. Camila has to make it through this.”
His words left no room for argument. The older Mr. Williams was moved by the fierceness in Dennis’s voice. His beloved apprentice had always been unlucky, but at least now she had someone who cared enough to fight for her without hesitation. If someone from outside the family could be this committed, how could he, as her mentor, do any less? There was no way he would let anything happen to her.
He quickly pulled himself together and replied, “I’ll get approval for the medical school to bring in outside teams. I’ll use every connection I have to gather the best people from the medical field. No matter what, we’re going to save Camila. And as for you, if you can bring in experts from abroad, that would be a huge help. I know you have the means.”
Mr. Williams was an expert in traditional medicine, but he was realistic about his limits. He knew there was always someone better out there. Where he specialized in one area, Western medicine excelled in others. If one approach didn’t work, maybe the other would.
Dennis nodded right away. “I’ll start looking now. Leave it to me.”
They spent a few more minutes working out the basics. They needed to quietly expand the research center, bring in new teams, and get all the equipment they’d need. Dennis brought up another idea. “We should get Professor Keri involved. He’s done some terrible things, but he’s the only one who truly understands G-1. If he works on the antidote, it could save us a lot of time.”
It was a solid plan, but Mr. Williams hesitated. “Keri’s a criminal. The authorities might not agree to it, even if I’m the one asking. I don’t really have any real power, and Keri’s background is complicated. There are a lot of people involved and the higher-ups have more to consider than we do.”
Dennis had already thought of this. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it. I’ll make sure they say yes.” He was the one who had caught Keri. Technically, the deal didn’t say when he had to hand him over, so he still had some say in the matter. And if that didn’t work, he had other ways.
Mr. Williams felt a wave of relief. He’d always known Dennis was different, but he hadn’t expected him to be capable of this much. “Camila is really lucky to have you,” he said, his voice soft. “If she can get through this, she’s going to have a happy life ahead.”
Dennis’s expression softened at Camila’s name. “I feel the same way. I’m lucky too.”
