Larry took a moment to gather his thoughts, then spoke honestly. “Blaming it on being drunk is just an excuse. In situations like that, it really comes down to two things. Either someone’s just messing around, or they’re hoping to take things further. I’ll admit, last night, when I was still clear-headed, I did try to turn her down. But I wasn’t exactly firm about it, because I have feelings for her too. When you’re with someone you care about, it’s easy to just go with your heart. The alcohol only made it easier, that’s all. I know maybe I crossed a line with Sarah, but I’m serious about wanting to see where this goes with her…”
That wasn’t the whole truth. Last night, the idea of a future with Sarah was only a passing thought. He’d never really believed someone like her would want him. But standing here now, he knew what he wanted. He had finally made up his mind, more certain than ever before.
Larry kept his voice respectful, and when Billy’s expression didn’t change, he kept going. “There have been some bad apples in the Adams family, but I’ve already dealt with them. Right now, my family is just my grandparents and my aunt and her family. If Sarah is with me, no one will treat her badly. They already care about her. Mr. Brown, I hope you’ll let us be together.”
Billy stared at him for a long time, almost like he was weighing every word. Finally, he snorted. “If you’d hesitated even a little today, or if you’d just hidden behind her, I’d never let you see her again. At least you’ve got the guts to stand here and own up to things. But I’m not giving you a free pass. Being together is one thing, marriage is another. If you’re serious, then date her with marriage in mind. If you’re not sure, end it now. I won’t let my Lillian waste her time on someone who isn’t worth it.”
Billy’s protective side came out in full force.
Larry didn’t argue. He just smiled. “You’re right, Mr. Brown. I’m not getting any younger, and I really have thought this through. But I know words don’t mean much, and you have no reason to believe me yet. How about you just wait and see what I do?”
Billy hadn’t expected Larry to be so straightforward. He stayed silent and took a slow sip of tea.
Outside, Sarah was still waiting. She’d been pacing for half an hour, her patience almost gone. She kept picturing the worst, like maybe Larry had already been torn apart by her brother. Why else was it so quiet? Back when she was in trouble, at least there was always a lot of noise and yelling.
The more she thought about it, the more anxious she got.
Just then, Aurora Robinson hurried in. She spotted Sarah outside the study, looking like a bundle of nerves, and couldn’t help but frown.
“Sarah, what’s going on? What happened?”
Seeing Aurora was like finding hope at the end of a long tunnel.
“Aurora, thank God you’re here!” Sarah practically jumped into her arms, holding on tight like Aurora was her last lifeline. She blurted out everything that had happened, barely stopping to breathe.
