Audrey caught the look of disdain in Cynthia’s eyes, but she pretended not to notice. She just slipped her phone back into her pocket and turned to Cynthia with a grateful smile.

“Cynthia, you really don’t have to come every day to look after me. I’m honestly feeling so much better now. I don’t need someone here all the time. You have your own life, your own stuff to handle. Coming here every single day just to keep me company… I appreciate it, but I kind of feel bad about wasting your time.”

What Audrey said was only half true. Now that she’d seen through Cynthia and realized her kindness came with strings attached, every encounter left her feeling unsettled. If it weren’t for her brother and Camila, she’d have been out of the hospital ages ago. She could be spending that time with Walter, maybe even working her way out of singlehood if she played her cards right.

But if you’re here in the hospital by yourself, I’d just worry. I’d rather be here, keeping you company. If you really think of me as a sister, don’t be so polite, okay?”

With Cynthia saying all that, Audrey knew if she kept pushing, she’d just look ungrateful. So she let out a sigh and managed a smile. “Cynthia, you’re honestly too good to me. Sometimes I think, I wish you were my real sister.”

Cynthia’s eyes flashed with something dark for just a second. In her heart, she thought, I don’t want to be your sister. There’s only one thing I want—to be your sister-in-law. Did Audrey really not see it, or was she just pretending?

Either way, Cynthia knew if she wanted to become Mrs. Williams, she’d have to make it happen herself.

She quickly put her thoughts away and beamed at Audrey. “You’re such a goof, you know that? Even if we’re not sisters by blood, I’ll always treat you like family.” Then, as if it had just occurred to her, she brought up Dennis. “By the way, is Jordan coming by today?”

Audrey had expected this. She kept her face calm. “Maybe. Maybe not. The Williams Group is so busy right now, and I can’t go to work, so my brother’s doing everything on his own. And… honestly, I don’t think he’s been in a great mood lately.”
