Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 461

Camila Davis nodded, then asked, “So, Mr. Morris, are you really sure you want to go?”

Mr. Morris shot her a wry look and grinned. “Why, you’ll miss me, won’t you?”

She bobbed her head, a little sheepishly. “Of course I’ll miss you!”

They’d only just patched things up between them—she hardly had a chance to really show her appreciation for her mentor. And once he started on this new research project, he’d be swamped; they’d barely see each other at all…

The thought made Camila’s chest tighten a bit.

Mr. Morris smiled warmly. “Don’t worry. The government folks inviting me over know I’m no spring chicken. They’re not about to work me to the bone. I’ll mostly be overseeing the project—making sure the young guys don’t set the place on fire.” He winked. “They’ve promised me a couple of days off every week, and I won’t be pulling all-nighters with the grad students. So relax, we’ll still have time to catch up, at least once a week.”

He paused, glancing at her over his glasses. “You could bring Lillian along for Sunday dinner, or maybe I’ll come over to Harrisburg for some of your famous apple pie. But honestly, all that’s secondary.”

He leaned forward, his voice turning serious. “At the end of the day, being a doctor means serving your calling. You and The Smith Group—your progress is tied closely to the government’s work. You’ve got to keep at it. I’m counting on you to make me proud.”

Camila straightened, nodding with determination. “You can count on me! I won’t let you down again, I promise!”

Mr. Morris finally looked satisfied.

After a moment, he added, “And from now on, bring Lillian over for dinner every night, will you? If you’re too busy, I’ll have Patrick pick her up. I’m going to miss having her around when I’m away.”

Camila got what he meant and agreed happily.

Meanwhile, across town, Raymond Mitchell was just getting home from a business dinner when his assistant filled him in about the cease-and-desist letter.

He glanced at it, rolled his eyes, and tossed it straight in the trash.

A nasty gleam flashed in Raymond’s eyes. He just had to figure out a way to bring the old man down. For good.

Unaware of Raymond’s scheming, Mr. Morris was busier than ever. When he wasn’t spending time with his adorable granddaughter Lillian, he was planning a huge birthday bash for Camila—his way of officially announcing to everyone just how much she meant to him.

Patrick, his right-hand man, was an old hand at throwing parties, but the guest list was something only Mr. Morris could finalize.

This was going to be no ordinary party. Mr. Morris had Patrick send out invitations to nearly everyone he knew—government officials, top brass from the military, the biggest names in medicine, and even a slew of business leaders he’d treated over the years.

Especially those business moguls—the heads of major corporations, each one a heavyweight in their own right.

It was shaping up to be the kind of party people would talk about for years.
