Even Patrick could tell—Mr. Morris was pulling out all the stops this time, making a big show for everyone to see. He was clearly out to put The Smith Family in their place.
He wanted them to know that even if they looked down on people without a silver spoon in their mouth, someone like him could still give Camila the world—fancy dinners, red carpets, the whole nine yards.
She deserved to be treated like a queen.
The funny thing was, Camila Davis had no clue what Mr. Morris was up to. She was completely in the dark about his secret plans.
Lillian knew, but she wasn’t about to spill the beans to her mom.
When Mr. Morris told her about it, he’d asked her to keep it hush-hush. “Let’s surprise your mom,” he’d said.
Lillian loved the idea of a surprise, so she jumped at the chance to help. During school, she’d sneak into Mr. Adams’ office to work on her drawings.
To keep it a secret, she didn’t even take the drawings home with her.
It was her first time being in on a surprise, and she was so excited she didn’t even mind staying late after class.
At first, Mr. Adams assumed Lillian was just working on an assignment from Mr. Williams, so he didn’t pay much attention.
But after a few days, her drawing started to come together, and Mr. Adams finally took a closer look. He realized she’d drawn a family of three, all sitting together at the kitchen table with a big chocolate cake. From the party hats and balloons in the background, it was clearly a birthday scene.
The drawing was so warm and detailed, it tugged at Mr. Adams’ heartstrings the moment he saw it.
Lillian was doing so much better than before. Thanks to Mr. Williams’ guidance, her emotional world had blossomed.
Now, she could really feel everything around her, and she poured those feelings right onto the page. Every drawing she made, you could feel something special just by looking at it.
Curious, Mr. Adams finally asked, “Lillian, this is amazing! Who’s the lucky person getting this masterpiece?”
Lillian’s eyes sparkled. “It’s for my mom! It’s her birthday soon, and I want to surprise her. But you have to keep it a secret, okay, Mr. Adams?”
Mr. Adams’ eyebrows shot up. “Your mom’s birthday? When is it?”
Did Dennis even know about this? It was going to be Ms. Davis’ first birthday since they’d met—definitely a big deal. The perfect chance to take things up a notch.
Lillian didn’t notice his scheming look. She just told him honestly, “It’s on the fifteenth! Just a few days away!”
“The fifteenth!” Mr. Adams smacked his knee. That was right around the corner.
He hadn’t heard a peep from Dennis about it—did Dennis even know? No way. If Dennis was finally interested in someone, as his best friend, Mr. Adams had to help him out!
