Camila Davis was a bit surprised.
Dennis Williams offered an apologetic smile. “Just got a call—something’s come up at NextGen Technologies. I need to head over there in person…”
Camila understood immediately. If NextGen needed him on-site, it had to be something big.
She didn’t want to be the reason he missed any work. So she quickly reassured him, “No worries, go do your thing. We’ll be waiting for you at home. Just… try not to push yourself too hard, okay? Make sure you eat and get some rest while you’re out…”
She trailed off, suddenly remembering something unpleasant. She’d said that kind of thing before—back when Jordan Smith used to travel. Back then, Jordan always thought she was nagging.
Camila thought she’d grown out of those habits, that she’d left them behind. But apparently, the concern was still woven into her bones, slipping out before she could catch it.
She glanced at Dennis, a little worried he’d find her fussing over him.
But Dennis looked at her, his eyes soft, a warm smile tugging at his lips. “You know, I used to travel for work all the time. Not once did anyone ever remind me to take care of myself. It’s nice, actually. Keep it up.”
He reached out and gently ruffled her hair.
There wasn’t even a hint of annoyance in his voice or his actions.
Camila felt her nerves melt away. She broke into a relieved smile and told him, “Alright, get going then. Safe travels.”
Little Lillian, oblivious to the adult tension, piped up in her sweet, high-pitched voice, imitating her mom: “Daddy, take care of yourself! Don’t skip meals, don’t get sick, or Mommy and I will be really sad!”
Dennis’s eyes softened even more. “Deal. But you have to promise to listen to Mommy while I’m gone. And I’ll bring back a surprise for you both.”
“Okay, yes! Bye, Daddy!” Lillian beamed and waved her tiny hand.
Dennis waved back, then headed out with Aaron.
After seeing them off, Camila took Lillian back inside.
The moment they stepped in, she found Susan grinning from ear to ear.
Camila was about to ask what had her in such a good mood, but Susan beat her to it. “So, Ms. Davis… you and Mr. Williams, are you together now?”
Camila felt her cheeks warm but nodded shyly.
Susan’s smile grew even wider. She clapped her hands delightedly. “Well, well! Looks like we’ll need to start stocking an extra set of razors and shaving cream! Maybe pick up a few more shirts too?”
She paused, then added, “Aaron was here bright and early this morning, dropping off clothes for Mr. Williams.”
