Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 678

He could almost see it, as if it was happening right in front of him—the way she looked back then, when she was about to marry Jordan Smith.

That time, he’d missed his chance to hold on to her.

When she finally walked away from Jordan, he’d thought they’d finally have all the time in the world.

They had the same ambitions, started a new business together, side by side.

Walter Wilson always just assumed, sooner or later, she’d end up with him.

But somehow, without him even noticing, they’d drifted apart, each heading down a different road.

A sinking feeling of loss took over Walter’s whole heart.

Almost on instinct, he took two steps toward her, wanting to ask, to just get it all out.

Why... why wouldn’t she look at him?

He wasn’t exactly hard to spot—how could she not see him standing right there?

But before he could say a word, the team came over, peppering her with questions about the project schedule.

Camila Davis’s attention shifted immediately, and she didn’t notice Walter’s fleeting look—or how stormy his face had become.

The rest of the day flew by in a blur.

By the time things finally settled down, it was already evening. Camila felt a little guilty as she addressed the team.

“Sorry, guys—this is only our first day. I should’ve let you get settled in, but instead, I had you running around working with me all day long. To make it up to you—and to welcome you to the team—dinner’s on me tonight!”

Her coworkers were already used to her style and just laughed it off.

“Ms. Davis, you’re way too nice,” someone grinned.

“Yeah, Mr. Wilson already told us the lab’s swamped and you barely have time to breathe, let alone show us the ropes. We’re just glad to help out,” another added.

“And you’ve been here with us all day, Ms. Davis. Most of this stuff isn’t even your job,” a third chimed in.

Nobody minded, and several even joked, “Besides, Mr. Wilson said he’d double our bonus at the end of the month!”

“Yep, and he made sure our apartments were set up. As soon as we landed, there were people waiting to take our luggage,” someone else laughed.

Camila glanced over at Walter and smiled.

This guy—always so on top of things.

All the stuff she forgot, he’d already handled. Working with him made it easy to just let go and trust.

Camila blinked, genuinely surprised by his outburst.

What on earth was that about? Why was he so worked up all of a sudden?

She looked him up and down, finally realizing something was off.

“Are you… mad about something?”

Walter felt his anger spike. He’d been in a mood all afternoon, and she was just now noticing!

This woman was impossible!

He grumbled, “None of your business.”

Camila, looking completely innocent, replied, “Fine, but if you’re in a bad mood, why take it out on me? I didn’t do anything to you!”

Walter wanted to knock some sense into her. How could she be so clueless?

Not only was she oblivious, she was infuriating!

Camila just grinned at his dark scowl, totally unafraid. “Come on, be reasonable. I didn’t say anything wrong. Haven’t we always been like this? You never used to complain.”

She shrugged, as if the whole thing was no big deal, while Walter could only grind his teeth and wonder how she could be so blind.
