“Yeah, yeah, I get it!”
……
Life at the research institute was a constant whirlwind, making the days fly by.
Before she knew it, Camila Davis was already three months into her time at the institute.
The Trust Group called for a general meeting to review everyone’s performance over the past few months.
The leadership gave a thorough assessment of each member, pointing out both strengths and areas for improvement.
With the project becoming more complex, team compositions might shift, and there was even talk of bringing in more people—possibly starting a second rookie team soon.
Eric Morris attended the meeting as well.
During the discussion, the head of the new recruits’ division singled out Camila’s team for special praise. “Group A has delivered the best results out of all the teams,” he announced. “Especially their leader, Camila Davis—her outstanding abilities really set her apart. I hope the rest of you will take her as an example and strive to match Group A’s achievements.”
The feedback was objective, free from flattery or exaggeration.
Still, Harper Thompson couldn’t help but smirk inwardly. Why single out Group A? Why go out of the way to praise Camila Davis? Wasn’t it obvious? Camila’s mentor was none other than Mr. Morris. Clearly, this was all for show—to curry favor and catch Mr. Morris’s eye. Hypocrites, the lot of them…
“You’ve only got a day on the rest of us, don’t flatter yourself! Mr. Morris, how about me…”
The group dissolved into good-natured banter, each person vying for the chance to be Mr. Morris’s next apprentice.
Even though everyone was joking, Camila couldn’t help but feel a flicker of suspicion. Since when did Harper Thompson start singing her praises? The two of them hadn’t really spoken since their falling-out over Lavinia Roberts. Admittedly, Harper had kept her head down and hadn’t made any mistakes at work lately, but the distance between them remained.
Had Harper really changed? Camila wasn’t so sure.
Across the room, Eric Morris gave Harper a cool, measured look. He’d been around long enough to read people far better than his beloved apprentice. Besides, he was well aware of the tension between Harper and Camila. Seeing Harper suddenly jump to Camila’s defense… Now that was suspicious.
