Aaron glanced at the rearview mirror, catching sight of the couple cozied up together in the backseat. He didn’t really want to ruin the mood, but he couldn’t help himself.
“Mr. Williams, you ducked out in the middle of the board meeting. The old guard’s waiting for you—don’t forget, you’ll need to head back soon and finish up.”
At the sound of his voice, Dennis Williams lifted his eyes, casting Aaron a cool, languid look. It was the kind of glance that said he was talking too much.
Aaron tried to look innocent, though his thoughts ran wild: Mr. Williams ditching work for love—shouldn’t Ms. Davis know she’s special enough for that? What a golden chance to show how much he cares! Why didn’t Mr. Williams ever seize the moment?
Camila Davis seemed to sense Aaron’s internal monologue. She stifled a laugh and teased, “Mr. Williams, you really shouldn’t make a habit of telling little white lies.”
She squeezed his hand, fingers interlaced with his, and said softly, “It’s alright if you’re a little late next time.”
Her easy understanding made Dennis’s heart melt. He gave her hand a gentle squeeze and replied, “I can’t help it. I worry about you—what if something happened?”
Then, as if suddenly remembering, he added, “But there’s still a mountain of work at NextGen Technologies. Why not come with me? Keep me company?”
Camila hesitated. “Are you sure that’s okay?”
Dennis smiled, tightening his hold on her hand. “Of course. I’ll show you around, introduce you to everyone. That way, next time you stop by, no one will be confused about who you are.”
His words tempted her in a way she hadn’t expected. Her heart raced, spinning out of control.
He wants everyone at NextGen to know about me? To acknowledge me?
She thought back to the old days at NextGen Technologies. Back then, no one knew who she was—only a handful of executives were aware of her connection to Jordan Smith. Jordan had always been paranoid about keeping their relationship secret. It wasn’t until their divorce became public that people finally learned the truth.
“Let’s go!” Camila replied, slipping her hand into his.
Side by side, they walked toward the entrance.
It was the start of the workday, and employees were streaming into the lobby. In an instant, every head turned—the CEO himself, hand in hand with a stunning young woman. Shock rippled through the crowd; all eyes locked on Camila, curiosity and disbelief plain on their faces.
Everyone in the company knew Dennis Williams’ reputation: cool, composed, never the type to entertain office romances. There was no shortage of admirers in the building, but none had ever gotten close. For years, he’d been a mystery—rarely seen, always surrounded by rumors.
Only in the past few months had he started appearing at the office more regularly. Hopeful admirers thought their moment had finally arrived, doing whatever they could to catch his attention and leave a good impression.
But before any of them could make a move, they were greeted by the sight of their elusive CEO escorting a woman—someone unmistakably important—through the doors of NextGen Technologies.
