Larry Adams had been keeping his emotions in check, but at Douglas Williams’s words, his steady gaze wavered. A wave of vulnerability churned within him, and a bitter sorrow pricked at his eyes, making them glisten with unshed tears. He quickly suppressed the feeling, took a deep breath, and replied, “I know. I’ve always known.”
Douglas Williams patted his arm comfortingly. “You’ve been through a lot these past few days. Go home and get some rest. As for your mother…” He looked at the urn and memorial plaque in Larry’s hands, his expression solemn. “Let’s hold a proper service for her and lay her to rest again. Now that her name is cleared, she can finally be at peace.”
“Okay,” Larry agreed, his voice hoarse.
The thought of the deceased cast a somber mood over the group. The Williams family elders had said what they needed to and, after comforting Larry, soon departed. Audrey Williams left with them, but not before telling Larry, “If you need anything, call me. I’ll always be here for you.”
“I will,” Larry said, accepting her kindness as he watched them drive away.
Jarvis Peters knew how difficult this was for him. Once the elders were gone, he clapped him on the back. “You got justice for your mother, man. You should be happy. From now on, things will be better. If you need us, you know where to find us.”
Larry nodded, appreciating the gesture. Walter Wilson simply gave his shoulder a firm squeeze, a silent echo of Jarvis’s sentiment, before he too said his goodbyes and left.
Soon, only Larry, Sarah Brown, Camila Davis, and Dennis Williams remained outside the estate. Larry had finally composed himself enough to speak properly to Dennis. “Dennis, thank you so much for this. If you and Sarah hadn’t come for me, I… I might not have made it back tonight.”
Dennis raised an eyebrow. “Do you really need to say that to me?”
