Back at the apartment Mallory had arranged, Emily took a hot shower and changed into clean pajamas. Then, she got into bed.
However, sleep never came.
Soon, she opened her suitcase, pulled out the divorce agreement she'd prepared months ago, and carried it to the window while she called Roman.
The line rang a few times before he picked up.
"Mrs. Holton." His tone was polite, but a little distant.
"I'm back in Crestmont," Emily said. "I'd like to meet Gabriel to discuss the divorce."
The silence on the other end of the line stretched until her stomach began to sink. She tightened her grip on the phone and waited.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Holton," Roman said at last, sounding both apologetic and constrained. "Mr. Holton isn't in the country."
With that, Emily ended the call, and the dark screen reflected her calm face.
She didn't overthink it. Maybe Holton Corp had a project overseas that needed Gabriel to handle himself.
It didn't matter. She could wait.
After all, six months had already passed. A few days sooner or later wouldn't change a thing. He still had to sign the divorce papers.
That night, Emily slept better than she had in months.
…
The next morning, Emily buttoned up a crisp white shirt, stepped into tailored slacks, and drove to the municipal hospital.
The familiar bite of disinfectant greeted her, and everything looked the same as it had six months ago. But something felt different.
Emily rode the elevator to the top floor, stopped outside the hospital director's office, and knocked.
"Come in," Adrain said.
Emily pushed the door open.
Adrain lifted his head from a stack of paperwork. The moment he saw her, his eyes lit up. He jumped to his feet and hurried over, grinning from ear to ear.
"Dr. Sterling, you finally came back!" He clasped her hand and pumped it with earnest warmth. "Welcome back!"
Emily pulled her hand back and politely nodded. "Dr. Strebelle."
Adrain then guided Emily to the coach and poured some coffee for himself. "We've missed having you around these past six months. Some of the trickier cases just sat there without you to take the lead."
Then, his tone shifted, just enough to let a hint of complaint seep through. "Wouldn't you know it? Not long after you left for your program, Gabriel left too. And ever since Holton Corp pulled back their funding, we've had to put a bunch of new projects on hold for months."
She pushed the door open, and whatever conversation happening inside the department snapped off. Instantly, dozens of eyes swung to the entrance.
A young intern reacted first, the joy evident in his voice as he said, "Dr. Sterling!"
"Dr. Sterling's back!"
Suddenly, everyone erupted in applause, and her colleagues stepped forward with excitement written all over their faces.
"Dr. Sterling, thank goodness you're back!"
"Seriously, it just hasn't felt the same without you around."
Emily looked around at the sea of familiar faces, and a faint smile tugged at her lips. She nodded to each person in turn.
From the back of the room, a hesitant, but clear male voice rang out, "Dr... Dr. Sterling."
Emily followed the voice and saw Arthur standing there in a white coat, looking slightly awkward.
Surprise flickered in her eyes.
What was Arthur doing here? Hadn't he been reassigned to Hostonia?
