The Billionaire's Regret: His Secret Wife Turned Medical Genius novel Chapter 112

Emily walked over to Arthur and asked, "What are you doing here?"

Arthur sheepishly rubbed the back of his head. "I was supposed to head back to Ritzland after a while, but the hospital reassigned me at the last minute, so they transferred me here."

So, that was it.

Emily nodded.

Just then, Mallory shouldered through the crowd, hooked an arm around Emily, and tugged her aside. She lowered her voice, tipped her chin toward Arthur, and smiled like a cat that had found cream. "Mills, he still hasn't given up on you. He even followed you back into the country."

Emily's gaze slid to Arthur, who was blushing as a few nurses peppered him with questions. Then, she brought her eyes back to Mallory, looking calm as ever. "Don't say that. I just want the divorce finalized so I can get back to work."

She wouldn't let herself think about anything else.

By dusk, city lights lit the sky, and the work shift wound down.

Mallory looped an arm around Emily's neck and energetically said, "Come on! We're taking Dr. Sterling out to celebrate!"

Arthur walked over with a hint of hope in his eyes. He said, "I know a new place. Their food's great."

Emily was about to nod when her phone buzzed. She glanced down and saw a number she hadn't seen in a long time—it was the Holton residence.

Her smile faded.

She lifted a hand to Mallory and Arthur, stepped into a quiet corner, and answered. "Hello."

An old, steady voice came through the line, "Emily, it's me."

It was Gabriel's grandfather, Edward Holton.

Emily's eyes widened in surprise.

Edward had been staying in a private facility overseas for years. Why was he back in the country now?

"Mr. Holton Senior," she said, giving nothing away.

"I heard from Roman that you're back," Edward said. "Come to the Holton residence for dinner tonight." It wasn't a request. It was an order.

Emily paused for a few seconds.

Edward was an elder, and she couldn't bring herself to refuse. "Alright, Grandpa. I'll come now."

With that, she hung up the call and returned to Mallory.

Upon seeing her expression, Mallory grew nervous. "What happened? Who was that?"

"Mr. Holton Senior wants me there for dinner," Emily replied.

Mallory's temper flared. "There's not a single decent person in the Holton family! Don't go! Let them stew!"

"It's fine," Emily said, shaking her head.

Gabriel had given her the cold shoulder after they got married, but Edward had never made things difficult for her. He had even sent her supplements every so often. Although he wasn't warm, he hadn't treated her unfairly either.

Emily had lost more weight than the last time he'd seen her, yet her eyes were clearer and brighter now. It was as if all the dust had been washed away, leaving only a quiet strength behind.

"I heard you're back at the municipal hospital as deputy director," he said.

"Yes," Emily replied.

"Good." Edward nodded, lifted the teacup, and blew across the rim. Steam curled up and softened his features.

After a pause, Edward gently set down his teacup. "Must you really divorce Gabriel?"

He finally asked what he'd brought her here to ask.

Emily raised her eyes and met his gaze. "Mr. Holton Senior, this marriage was a mistake from the beginning."

Edward let out a long sigh and sank against the back of the coach. "Then, that's Gabriel's loss. You were everything a great partner should be."

His clouded eyes locked onto Emily, as if trying to see right through her. "What if... What if Gabriel realized he was wrong? What if he wanted to make it right?

"Mills, could you give him another chance?"

The living room fell into an awkward silence as the steady ticking of the old wall clock droned on.

Emily didn't respond. She simply sat there, steady and composed.

Her silence spoke louder than words.
