Emily looked past Gabriel and at the unit behind him. The door matched hers exactly, right down to the shine on the handle.
Gabriel straightened his back and took a step closer to her. "I moved in," he said, as if he were talking about the weather.
Emily's eyes went cold.
Was he watching her? Or was this just the first move to pull her back under his control?
But Gabriel acted like he didn't notice her annoyance and lifted an insulated carrier. "Roman ordered from the restaurant you like," he said. "Let's eat."
The scent of the food smelled like the seafood casserole she used to love. But tonight, it only smelled like mockery.
"No." Emily brushed past Gabriel and slid her key into the lock. "You're busy, Mr. Holton. Don't waste time on this."
She turned the handle, but Gabriel caught her wrist.
"Emily."
But Emily didn't turn around and simply shook him off. "Gabriel, the centennial celebration is over," she slowly said. "The show's over, and I've done what I promised to do."
Then, she opened the door, turned slightly, and met his dark eyes. "If you have a minute, use it to sign the divorce papers."
With that, she stepped inside and shut the door hard.
The thick door stood like a barrier between them.
Gabriel stood frozen in the hallway, staring at the closed door. His grip tightened around the carrier until his knuckles turned white.
Meanwhile inside the apartment, Emily slid down the back of the door until she sat on the floor.
Her heart pounded—not out of love, but from a suffocating pressure.
Emily stepped out and saw the cardiothoracic hallway packed like a subway station at rush hour. People crammed shoulder to shoulder as far as she could see.
Her first thought was that a medical accident had happened, but the faces weren't filled with panic. Instead, they looked eager and full of hope.
Janet fought her way through the crowd and seized on Emily like a lifeline. "Dr. Sterling, thank God you're here!"
She wiped the sweat from her forehead. "All these patients booked under your name and are demanding to see you personally! Overnight, your appointment slots were resold at outrageous prices! Half of them say if they can't get to see you, they'll camp out here forever!
"They keep insisting their conditions are critical and only you can fix them. Nothing we say helps..."
"Activate Level One emergency protocol," Emily said.
Janet froze for a second, then quickly caught on. "Yes, Dr. Sterling!"
