In the hospital director's office, Adrain ended the call and wiped the sweat from his forehead.
The anonymous complaint was lodged against Emily, but regardless of whoever was targeting her, Adrain had no intention of getting involved in this case. So, he picked up the phone and dialed for Gabriel.
When Gabriel picked up, Adrain carefully relayed what he'd just heard.
"Mr. Holton, we've just received an anonymous complaint against Dr. Sterling. The complainant says..."
Gabriel had been listening to Roman's report, but the moment he heard Adrain mention Emily's name, he raised a hand to stop Roman.
He listened to Adrian without a flicker of emotion on his face. "I understand," he said, and then hung up.
Adrain stayed there with the receiver in his hand, baffled. Was Gabriel going to intervene or not?
Gabriel set the phone down and looked at Roman. "Find out who went to see Emily this morning."
Roman understood what was being asked of him immediately. Within ten minutes, he came back with a printout where Vivian's name sat plain as day on the visitor log.
A cold smile tugged at Gabriel's lips.
He called the head of the Public Relations Department and said, "You have half an hour. I want everyone in this city to know that Dr. Emily Sterling, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the municipal hospital, stands for integrity and sets the standard in her field. Make her the brightest name that hospital has."
The other end of the line fell silent for a moment. "Mr. Holton, we just received a complaint about her..."
"A complaint? That's slander." Gabriel's voice turned cold. "In my hospital, no one slanders my doctors with cheap tricks."
Especially not Emily.
...
That afternoon, Emily had finally finished wrapping up a six-hour surgery.
As she stepped out of the operating room, Mallory rushed over to her, eyes gleaming with excitement. "Mills, you're trending!"
Only one person would pull a move this overbearing—Gabriel.
Emily turned the phone off without a word.
…
By the time Emily reached her apartment, exhaustion was laced in every step she took. At that moment, she just wanted a bath to wash off the day and the mess Gabriel had dragged into her life again.
However, when the elevator doors slid open, she stopped short.
In the hallway, leaning against the frame of the unit next to hers, stood the last man she wanted to see.
Gabriel waited like he'd been standing guard for ages. He was still in his suit from earlier, his tie loosened just enough to soften the sharp edges, making him look like he'd just come home.
His handsome face was unreadable as usual.
