The night weighed upon the city, and a single floor lamp lit Gabriel's apartment.
He sat on the couch with a tablet on his lap—not reading spreadsheets or market feeds, but an e-book version of "Thirty-six Ways to Win Your Wife Back."
He scrolled slowly, then stopped when a chapter caught his eye.
"Chapter 17: Lean Into Her Strengths, and Be the Partner She Trusts Most at Work."
Gabriel closed the tablet, picked up his phone, and called Roman.
"Email me the smart-health proposal and set up a meeting for me with Dr. Strebelle for tomorrow morning."
...
The next day, Adrain greeted Gabriel in the director's office with a beaming smile and hands nearly clasped in gratitude. "Mr. Holton, you're here!"
He handed Gabriel a cup of his best coffee. "First, you brought in visiting specialists. Then, you streamlined our systems. And now, you want to invest in a smart-health project. How are we supposed to thank you?"
Gabriel took the couch with poise, his expression giving nothing away. "Don't mention it, Dr. Strebelle. It's only the right thing to do." He then took a sip of the coffee and set the cup down. "I only have one request."
Adrain perked up immediately. "Please, tell me!"
"I want Dr. Emily Sterling from the cardiothoracic surgery department to lead the pilot," Gabriel said.
For a split second, Adrain's smile froze.
Just then, there was a knock at the door.
"Come in," Adrain said.
Emily stepped in, fresh from a major operation. However, when she saw the man on the coach, she froze for a second.
"Perfect timing," Adrain said as he stood up. "Dr. Sterling, Mr. Holton is proposing a major partnership.
It's a smart-health system for the hospital. He wants to involve the cardiothoracic surgery department in pilot runs, with you leading the project." For the hospital, this was a windfall.
Gabriel was still holding onto the proposal, but his hand had frozen in midair.
The light in his eyes dimmed.
He'd expected Emily to hesitate and maybe set a few conditions, but he hadn't expected her to turn him down outright.
Meanwhile, Emily didn't spare a glance at Gabriel at all. She simply gave Adrain a small nod and said, "If there's nothing else, I need to get back."
With that, she turned and left without a backward glance.
Gabriel lowered the proposal, his fingers tightening around the edges of the file, then walked out of the office as well.
All the while, Adrain remained where he stood, blinking blankly as his office door closed.
He couldn't believe what had just happened.
