"You definitely can't go back to the Sterling residence. The villa and your apartment aren't safe either, so you can't stay there anymore.
"Why don't you move in with me for the time being?" Mallory suggested.
Emily shook her head. Her movements were slow and steady as she placed her last shirt atop the stack of clothes in her suitcase. "I'm not going anywhere," she said, lifting her head to look at Mallory calmly but resolutely. "I'm going to stay in the hospital."
Mallory was stunned by her words. "In the hospital? Where?"
"The on-call room."
Emily wasn't going to budge on her decision. She didn't want to trouble Mallory, and she didn't want to get involved with the outside world anymore either. She just wanted to find a place to stay where she could have some peace and quiet, and the hospital's on-call room was her best option.
Mallory felt a little choked up as she looked at Emily, and she realized that she couldn't say a single word.
Emily had used to be a bright and dazzling lady. She'd even used to be the genius surgeon that was admired by everyone in the hospital.
Now, she was forced to hide in the tiny and simple on-call room.
In the end, Mallory didn't say anything. Her eyes simply reddened as she helped Emily zip her suitcase.
The surgeon's on-call room was in a terrible condition. They were two metal-frame beds that were arranged parallel to each other, and a single desk that had definitely seen better days.
Since the surgeons could be summoned for an emergency operation at any time, it was rare for there to be actual peace and quiet in the room.
However, Emily didn't seem to notice. She arranged her sparse belongings into a locker before putting on the bedsheets. Then, she lay down on the bed.
Mallory felt as if her heart was being stabbed as she stood at the door and looked at Emily's thin figure curled up on the narrow bed.
Emily shouldn't be forced to live in such conditions.
Instantly, a plan began to form in Mallory's mind. She then turned around and hurried toward Adrain's office.
…
Half an hour later, Mallory opened the on-call room's door clutching a set of keys.
She walked to Emily's bedside and gently patted her. "You don't have to sleep here anymore, Mills. Get up. I'm going to bring you somewhere else."
Emily opened her eyes, not quite understanding what was happening.
