Gabriel raised his pitch near the end, injecting danger into the tone of his voice.
"You want to divorce me so you can get together with him?"
Robert's face darkened. He didn't bother hiding the animosity in his eyes. "You're Emily's husband? You better watch your words."
Gabriel finally looked at Robert. He gave him a onceover before asking Emily, "Did you go on dates with him while you were in Nevia when I wasn't around? The two of you hooked up a long time ago, right?" He had shouted the last part of his sentence.
A dead silence descended over the ward, but Emily merely looked at Gabriel and stayed silent. She didn't look angry, and neither did she try to explain herself. She was completely indifferent to his accusations.
The corners of her lips slowly curved up. "Hooked up? Gabriel, in your eyes, am I someone who only knows how to use such a despicable method?"
She lifted her eyes and calmly looked into Gabriel's furious gaze. "He's just an old friend. As for you, your possessiveness is so ridiculous that it's almost funny. "
Gabriel's arrogance disappeared in an instant the moment the words left Emily's lips.
He had no comeback because her words were true. He wanted to say something, but he felt as if he had something stuck in his throat, trapping the words in his chest.
In the end, he simply glared at Robert one last time before whipping around and rushing out of the ward.
Robert frowned deeply as he watched Gabriel bolt out. He then turned back to look at Emily, unable to hide the worry gleaming in his eyes. "I'm sorry. I didn't know he—"
Emily lightly shook her head, stopping him from finishing his sentence.
She wasn't bothered enough to spare another glance at Gabriel and simply closed her eyes again. She was exhausted, so she didn't want to waste anymore of her emotions if she could help it.
She had known for a long time what type of man Gabriel was. It was just that, from time to time, she'd still foolishly try to search for a trace of warmth within him.
But she had freed herself from that foolish dream now.
A dead silence descended over the ward once again. In the end, Robert chose to remain quiet and simply studied Emily's pale face.
"She's so pretty. It's no wonder Mr. Holton's so crazy about her."
"It's not just Mr. Holton. I saw a really handsome man visit her two days ago. Apparently, he's the heir of a prestigious family."
"Dr. Sterling sure knows how to play her cards right."
Emily's body was getting better by the day. When she was well enough to get out of bed and move around, she would occasionally ask Mallory to support her as she walked to the window at the end of the hallway to get some fresh air.
She could feel people's curious, disdained, and smug gazes on her all the time. But she would simply walk past them with an indifferent expression, keeping her eyes trained in front of her.
Soon, Emily was finally deemed fit enough to be discharged from the hospital.
As Mallory helped her pack her belongings, she asked, "Have you thought about where to go, Mills?"
