He had just disembarked from the plane, but instead of letting his body adjust to the jet lag, he had asked his assistant about the hospital Emily had been admitted into.

He was carrying an elegant fruit basket, but he halted when he spotted the man leaning against the wall.

The man's head was lowered, and Robert could sense the waves of dejection rolling off his body.

He recognized him in an instant—it was Gabriel.

Gabriel also seemed to have noticed that someone was looking at him. He slowly lifted his head and made eye contact with Robert.

He raised his hand and lightly knocked on the door.

"I just landed. I'm here to see Emily." Robert looked over Mallory's shoulder in the direction of the hospital bed.

Mallory shifted to the side to let him enter the ward. Then, the door clicked shut again in Gabriel's face.

Robert placed the fruit basket on the table before he walked over to the bed.

He frowned deeply as he took in Emily's pallid complexion. The unserious expression that he usually wore melted away in an instant when he saw her, replaced by a pained expression that he didn't bother hiding.

"What happened to you?"

Emily slowly peeled open her eyes. A tiny hint of emotion finally flickered in her hollow eyes when she realized who she was looking at. "Robert?" She was surprised that he was back in the country.

"It's me." Robert moved a chair next to the bed. His eyes never left Emily's face even once. "I contacted Dr. Strebelle the moment I landed. That's also when I learned that you were admitted to the hospital.
