Gabriel's face gradually turned paler the more Emily spoke.
Emily averted her gaze and said, "I'll ask my lawyers to prepare the divorce papers. You have no right to refuse." She closed her eyes after she was done speaking, refusing to spare him another glance.
Mallory didn't feel any sympathy for Gabriel in the slightest despite how crestfallen he looked. "Didn't you hear her? Please leave right now." She opened the door and gestured for him to leave. Her eyes were as cold as ice.
Gabriel's lips trembled slightly, but in the end, he couldn't find it in himself to say anything. He simply turned around and walked out of the ward with stiff and sluggish steps.
Soon, the ward's door clicked shut behind him.
Mallory breathed a sigh of relief. Then, she whipped around and hurried back to the bed.
Her heart felt like it was breaking as she took in Emily's pallid complexion and saw that her eyes were squeezed shut too.
"You did the right thing, Mills," she said as she held Emily's freezing hand. "You should've kicked a bastard like him to the curb a long time ago. You have to divorce him! You definitely have to!" It wasn't worth it for Emily to get hurt so badly for the sake of a man like Gabriel.
Emily didn't open her eyes, though her long lashes quivered slightly. In the end, she just quietly hummed in response.
She had mustered the last of her strength while making her decision. She felt like she was wielding a knife, severing the heavy chains that had trapped her for two years. She was finally going to be free soon.
Upon seeing how exhausted Emily was, Mallory didn't continue speaking. Instead, she gently tucked the blanket around her, saying, "Get some rest. Don't think about anything. Leave everything else to me."
Mallory didn't care whether or not Gabriel agreed to the divorce. She was determined to make it a reality.
…
Gabriel leaned against a wall at the end of the hallway, feeling like his soul had been stolen away from his body.
He pulled out his phone and called Roman.
It didn't take long for Roman to pick up. "What are your orders, Mr. Holton?"
Gabriel's voice sounded incredibly hoarse as he said, "Send the best nutritionist team in the city here. Also, I don't care how much it costs, buy the best supplements the market has to offer and send them all to the VIP ward in the municipal hospital."
He wanted to do something for Emily. He knew that these material compensations weren't worth much, but he was willing to do anything for her. He couldn't bear to watch her grow weaker while not doing anything to help her.
Roman seemed to hesitate on the other end of the line. "Mr. Holton, I'm afraid that Ms. Sterling—"
"Just do as I say!" Gabriel roared, interrupting him. His emotions were like a powder keg at that moment. Any little obstacle he was faced with was enough to make his temper explode.
After hanging up, Gabriel didn't leave the hospital. Instead, he continued leaning against the wall and stared at the ward door.
The security guards felt a little hesitant when they noticed how expensive the gift boxes looked. However, they didn't dare question Mallory further when they saw the determined glint in her eyes and did as she ordered.
It didn't take long for the security guards to clear the large pile of supplements, throwing everything into the trash.
Gabriel watched the entire scene unfold using the surveillance camera that was installed at the end of the hallway.
Emily hadn't turned around even once, and he was struck with the realization that she truly didn't want anything. She didn't want him to compensate her, she didn't want him to care for her, and she definitely didn't want him.
He pulled out his phone and called Roman again. His voice was cold as he said, "Get rid of the nurses who were spreading rumors about Emily in the past."
Roman was momentarily stunned, but he swiftly regained his composure and answered, "Understood, Mr. Holton."
"I want their careers in the medical field to be completely ruined."
After throwing that command, Gabriel continued leaning against the wall at the end of the hallway and didn't move from that position for a long time.
Suddenly, the sound of slow and steady footsteps shattered the silence.
The person who'd come was dressed in a tailored yet casual suit that flattered his tall and lean figure. His face didn't fit in at all with the solemn atmosphere of the hospital.
