When it came down to it, Amelia had indeed saved him once in the past.
In the end, the murderous glint in Gabriel's eyes gradually faded. "Get out of my sight," he simply said.
Amelia was stunned for a moment before realizing that Gabriel was letting her go. She scrambled to her feet and ran out of the office while wiping the tears from her eyes. Then, the door slammed shut behind her.
After shutting the door, Gabriel swayed from left to right before he collapsed onto the couch, feeling as if his strength had fled him.
He raised his hands and massaged his throbbing temples.
He didn't have any concrete evidence to prove that Amelia had orchestrated Emily's abduction. Not to mention, the abductors' bank accounts weren't local, and whoever hired them had used an encryption system and voice changer to communicate with them too.
There was no way for him to trace the source. The photo only proved that Amelia had been emotionally unfaithful to him, but it wasn't able to connect the abduction to her.
…
The smell of disinfectant permeated the air in the hospital VIP ward.
Emily was already awake and leaning against the headboard. Her eyes were hollow as she stared out of the window.
Meanwhile, Mallory was watching over her, sitting next to the bed and peeling an apple for her.
Suddenly, the ward's door was pushed open, revealing Gabriel standing at the doorway.
Mallory stopped peeling the apple as she lifted her eyes and coldly glared at him.
Emily, however, didn't even bother looking at him.
Gabriel's footsteps seemed a little heavy as he approached the bed and gazed at her pale face. He looked like he wanted to say something, but he couldn't help but feel that what he wanted to say was incredibly laughable.
His apology was completely useless considering how much he had hurt her.
In the end, Emily spoke first.
"Did you catch the mastermind?"
Mallory stopped peeling the apple and looked at Gabriel as well, waiting for his answer.
Gabriel's Adam's apple bobbed as he averted his gaze. "We're still looking into it," he finally said, sounding troubled. "We don't have enough concrete evidence."
Emily slowly turned her head to look at him. There wasn't any anger or doubt in her eyes. Then, a smile stretched across her face when she finally registered his answer.
This knowledge made the blood flowing through Gabriel's veins freeze.
He halted his footsteps and left his hand suspended in midair. He wanted to touch Emily, but he was also afraid of scaring her.
He looked at the empty cup on the bedside cabinet and noticed that Emily's lips were dry, cracked, and pallid. He grabbed the water jug and clumsily filled the cup with warm water. Then, he offered the cup to her.
Mallory snatched the cup from his hands and slammed it on the cabinet, causing some of the water to spill out. "She doesn't want to drink any water you pour, and she doesn't want to see you either! Don't you understand what we're saying?
"How long are you going to continue to be an eyesore, Gabriel? Every second that you remain here is a form of torture for Emily!"
Emily finally moved and slowly turned her back on Gabriel. "I'm really tired, Gabriel. If you don't want to push me to my death, let's get a divorce."
The blood drained from Gabriel's face in an instant. "No… I won't agree to that."
He felt as if his world was crumbling around him. He thought that he hated Emily, but the moment she mentioned the word "divorce," the pain that he experienced was even more unbearable than getting stabbed in the heart.
It seemed that Emily had expected his answer. She didn't look surprised in the slightest. Her lips twitched before she asked, "What gives you the right to disagree? Because I'm a substitute that you can humiliate whenever you please?
"Or is it because you trapped me in your villa for the sake of your beloved, allowing me to be abducted in the process. Or maybe it's because you refuse to seek justice for me even now."
