Gabriel hurled his phone to the floor, causing its screen to shatter into pieces. Then, he grabbed his suit jacket and stormed out.
...
Emily had barely made it home and was still skimming headlines when a deafening crack shattered the silence.
The lock gave way, the door burst inward, and the frame rattled in its hinges.
She jolted at the sound. But before she could even move, Gabriel had already stormed in.
His eyes were bloodshot, and the rage emanating from his body was palpable.
He slammed a stack of photos onto the coffee table and walked toward Emily. "Emily," his cold voice came through clenched teeth, "how do you explain these?"
Emily looked down at the photos of her and Robert at the café. Every shot made them look as if they were close.
Did Gabriel see every word she spoke and every move she made as a betrayal?
Emily didn't even want to try explaining.
Then, Gabriel snatched up a photo and shoved it inches from her face. "What did Robert give you that made you run from me to him? That loss assessment was his price, wasn't it?
"The Dowlings take one small hit and you're already sick over it? Emily, how cheap are you?"
Emily lifted her head. "Gabriel, you're right."
Gabriel's eyes widened in shock. She'd admitted it that easily?
He searched Emily's face for a lie but found nothing. Her eyes were calm as dead water.
Upon seeing his shock, the corner of Emily's mouth tipped up. "I don't want to fight or waste another second on you. You used my family to force me to go back, and I did."
