The Billionaire's Regret: His Secret Wife Turned Medical Genius novel Chapter 78

Gabriel never took his eyes off the fragile figure on the couch.

"Ms. Sterling was badly shaken. We called an ambulance, but she refused to go to the hospital and wouldn't speak to anyone."

Gabriel nodded and walked toward Emily.

But Emily flinched when he reached her.

Still, Gabriel slipped out of his suit jacket and—a little stiffly—settled it over her shoulders.

Emily shivered, lifted her face, and looked at him without a word.

Gabriel crouched so that they were level. He wanted to ask her what had happened, but his throat felt as though it was packed with cotton.

In the end, nothing came out, and he simply brushed a wet strand away from Emily's cheek.

The icy touch of her skin made his heart tighten.

"I'm taking you home," he said, his voice low and rough—a sound he himself barely recognized.

Emily didn't react.

Upon seeing this, Gabriel stopped hesitating and carefully lifted her up, as if she might break if he so much as gripped onto her.

He carried her past Robert, who was still pinned to the floor. As he did so, he didn't pause, but neither did he hide the murderous intent flickering in his eyes.

Robert looked at Gabriel, then at Emily.

She seemed so lost in despair that it was as if she had already died.

At that moment, he knew he had lost her for good.

Gabriel crossed the tape and eventually neared his car. Then, he eased Emily into the back seat before climbing in beside her.

The air in the car felt still and suffocating.

Gabriel didn't start the engine. Instead, he simply watched as Emily curled up tight, as if the space around her was dangerous.

He had never seen her like this before, and the feeling that rose within him now was something he couldn't even name.

Emily stopped and turned around. "Get out."

But Gabriel didn't move. Words were crowded in his chest, but they wouldn't pass his throat.

His silence set her off. "I said get out!" Emily screamed. She then snatched up a lamp and hurled it with everything she had.

Instantly, it shattered on the floor near Gabriel's feet, glass skittering everywhere.

Gabriel watched Emily's chest heave, her eyes blazing like she would take him down with her if she had to.

He backed up a step, then another, and kept going until he stood in the hallway.

Then, the door slammed shut and the lock clicked.

Gabriel stayed there for so long that it felt like the air had turned stale.

When no more sound came from the room, he turned away and walked to the study. Then, he took out his phone and made a call.

The line picked up almost at once.
