Amelia opened the president's office door, wearing the soft, practiced smile she had rehearsed a hundred times over. "Gabriel, you wanted to see me?"
Gabriel didn't look at her. He simply stood at the window, rigid and cold, while the air in the room felt suffocating.
A sense of unease crawled up Amelia's spine. She took a few steps closer and softened her voice, saying, "Is something wrong at work? Don't worry. I can..."
"Starting today," Gabriel flatly said, "every system permission you hold at Holton Corporation is revoked. Your role will be reassigned, and you won't be handling anything further."
Color drained from Amelia's face.
"Wh… Why?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Gabe, what did I do wrong? Tell me, and I'll fix it..."
Gabriel turned around with a faint smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "One more thing. For your safety, you'll be 'protected' day and night." He bit down hard on the word "protected."
His words hit Amelia like a blow.
He was stripping her access and putting her under watch. Did he already find her out?
"I don't understand," she said, tears spilling fast. "Gabriel, you can't treat me like this..."
But Gabriel didn't want to speak to her anymore.
This would do for now. After all, throwing her into prison would be too merciful.
"I don't need you to understand. Get out," he coldly said.
...
A few days later, at the municipal hospital, Emily slumped in her office chair and rubbed the bridge of her nose.
Just then, the door burst open.
Mallory rushed in, eyes shining with the type of sparkle only gossip could conjure up. She could hardly hold herself back as she said, "Emily! Did you hear? Holton Corporation just had a big shake-up!"
Emily lifted her gaze and gave little more than a blink.
After all, she couldn't care less about what was happening at Holton Corporation.
Gabriel wasn't standing up for her, he was just dealing with what he saw as his possession.
"Is that so?" Emily nonchalantly asked. She then turned the chart to the next page and said, "I've got a surgery at 3:00 pm. I need to review the file."
Her calm, nearly indifferent tone made it sound as if Mallory had merely reported the weather.
Mallory opened her mouth, then closed it again.
Something about Emily had changed over the last few days. Mallory couldn't put her finger on it, but she felt that Emily had become quieter and colder.
…
Over the following days, Emily lost herself in work. She moved between wards and the operating room like a tide that knew no ebb.
In her office, she was bent over an especially complex chart. The difficulty of this surgery would be unlike anything she had ever done.
Just then, Mallory came in with two cups of coffee and excitement written all over her face. "Dr. Sterling, our star surgeon!" She set the coffee down on the table. "Everyone's talking about your next case! It's the first surgery like this in the country. If you succeed, you'll make history!"
