Emily didn't even lift her eyes from the chart. She merely nodded.
Glory or disgrace meant nothing to her. Someone lay on a table waiting to be saved. Naturally, this surgery had to succeed.
Mallory sighed at Emily's unruffled calm. "Come on, say something. This is big. The board's got their eyes on you. It's a chance, but it could just as well burn you!" she said, her voice rising.
At the end of the hallway, Roman walked past in a black suit. He was there to collect a file for Gabriel.
He happened to catch Mallory's last words as he passed by.
He stopped at the door, casting a quick glance inside before moving on. When he reached a quiet corner, he pulled out his phone and made a call.
"Mr. Holton."
Silence hummed on the other end.
"Dr. Sterling's got a highly complex case next week. The hospital's paying close attention to it. It's the first of its kind in the country, and the risk is very high," Roman spoke flatly, like a robot.
Gabriel's breath grew heavy. After a pause, he ordered, "Get Glensya Heart Center's top team on a plane now. Install Shovic's newest intraoperative imaging system at the municipal hospital tonight. Tell Adrain this surgery must not fail."
...
That afternoon, Adrain rushed into Emily's office, wearing a smile that was eager to please but awkward at the edges.
"Dr. Sterling, I've got good news." He rubbed his hands, voice tight with excitement. "Mr. Holton's arranged for the best cardiothoracic team from Glensya to support you, and the latest Shovic system is being delivered tonight.
"That's a huge favor!"
Emily's fingers stilled on the chart. She lifted her head, her expression cold.
Gabriel's actions plainly meant that he didn't trust her. In his eyes, she was nothing more than a fragile woman surviving on his favor.
Now, he had even intruded into the last untouched corner of her world.
Why? He had done so much for her! He'd brought the best money could buy and laid it at her feet.
Why didn't she want it? Had he been wrong all along?
...
Emily's surgery went ahead on schedule. There were no experts from Glensya and no new machines, only Emily and her own team.
Thirteen hours later, the operating room lights finally went dark.
Drained to the bone, Emily stepped out and told the family in a soft voice, "The surgery was a success."
Within hours, the news tore through the country's medical circles, and Emily became a legend overnight.
Mallory wrapped her in a hug, crying and laughing all at once. "Emily, you did it! You actually did it!"
