Emily let Mallory hold on to her and simply leaned into the embrace as the exhaustion rolled over her.
She had done it on her own, without Gabriel's suffocating favors or interference. With her own hands, she had won the honor that belonged to her.
Emily returned to her empty office without turning on the lights.
At the window, she watched her blurred reflection sway on the glass.
…
By the time the news reached Gabriel, it was deep at night.
However, he felt no joy and no relief. Instead, he felt hollow, as if his heart had been carved out.
Emily had won.
The elite team and the expensive equipment he had prepared for her looked like a joke. She hadn't needed any of it. By her choice, she had said it plainly. She didn't need his power nor his so-called protection.
What could he possibly do for her now?
After a moment, he called Roman.
"Is Cole still gambling?"
"No. But he still hasn't paid off what he borrowed from Damien last time."
Gabriel frowned. "Settle part of his debt."
The messages spilled over with giddy certainty and excitement.
"Emily! You're the best! Gabriel sent someone to pay my debt! He helped me clear Damien's debt and said he did it for you! Talk to him for me and see if he can help me again. I still need a little more..."
Emily's eyes widened.
She stared at the jagged lines on the screen until it felt like her blood had gone cold.
Gabriel had pushed his way into her life again without asking. She had clawed her way out of the Sterling family mire by inches, and he had just tied her back to it!
Her phone buzzed once more.
This time, it was Roman calling.
