The Billionaire's Regret: His Secret Wife Turned Medical Genius novel Chapter 87

Emily expressionlessly picked up the phone.

"Ms. Sterling," Roman said in a measured tone, "Mr. Holton has already cleared Cole's debt..."

"Give Mr. Holton my words," she said, cutting him off. "He doesn't need to bother with this." She paused, looking at the window. The sun outside was so bright it stung her eyes.

Then, she added, "If he has money burning a hole in his pocket, he can donate it to the hospital's charity fund. Some patients need it a lot more than Cole."

With that, she hung up before Roman could even respond. Then, she set the phone face down on her desk, picked up her pen, and went back to the dense chart she had been reviewing.

Roman repeated her words to Gabriel.

"Ms. Sterling said if you have money burning a hole in your pocket, you can donate it to the hospital's charity fund."

Gabriel's face tightened.

He had thought she would accept it, even if it was against her will. After all, her family was a bottomless pit. Didn't she want to escape them?

He had handed her the most direct way to escape. Yet, she would rather give the money to strangers than accept his kindness.

Was she really so desperate to cut ties with him?

"I got it," Gabriel said, waving his hand.

Roman bowed and walked to the door, then quietly closed it behind him.

Now, only Gabriel was left in the room.

However, no one noticed that just before Roman left, Amelia had been outside, eavesdropping. She'd told the bodyguards she was heading to the restroom, then slipped past the security cameras to Gabriel's office.

"People say it got buried, but this sort of thing can blow up, and I'm worried for her. If something like that surfaces now, her career could be over.

"Could you look into it for me? If there's any documentation from back then, it would help. I only want to warn her so she can be more careful."

She made it sound heartfelt and protective—a favor wrapped around a trap.

"No problem," Michael said, unguarded. "Leave it to me. I'll get to the bottom of it!"

"Thank you. You really are a good man."

Then, Amelia hung up, and the softness slid off her face like a mask. Whatever expression remained could only be described as cold and vicious.

"Emily, I'll destroy you!" she snarled.
