Roman's heart skipped a beat. If Cole were crippled, his life would be over.
Gabriel had truly been enraged this time.
Roman didn't dare ask questions or even guess at the reasons for such doings. He simply said, "Yes, Mr. Holton. I'll take care of it right away." Then, he hurried out of the office.
Gabriel pressed a hand to his temple. "Where's Emily now? Where can she go at this hour after leaving the apartment in the middle of the night…"
...
Emily dragged her suitcase to Mallory's apartment and stood outside the door. She didn't cry, and neither did a single tear well up in her eyes.
It was midnight when Mallory heard the doorbell ring. She shuffled to the door in her slippers, but the second she saw who it was, all trace of sleep vanished. "Mills?"
Emily looked disheveled and was clutching her suitcase handle so tightly her knuckles were white.
Mallory's heart sank as she yanked Emily inside. "What happened?"
Emily sat on the couch, and it took her a long time before she could even raise her head. Her voice was hoarse as she said, "I cut Maurice off. From today onward, I have nothing to do with the Sterling family."
Mallory froze for a moment, then a surge of fury shot straight to the top of her head. "That bastard cornered you again, didn't he?" She shot to her feet, snatched up her keys, and made for the door. "I'll make him pay! Who the hell does he think he is!"
But Emily's cold hand closed around Mallory's wrist. Her grip wasn't firm, but Mallory couldn't move another step. "Let it go."
Her eyes were unnervingly calm as she looked at Mallory. "Mal, it's not worth it. We're done. We've cut ties completely. From now on, whatever happens to them is none of my business." She paused, lips twisting into a bitter smile. "Sometimes, I wonder if I really am his daughter..."
Even a tiger, as cruel as it was, wouldn't eat its own cubs. So, how could Maurice keep throwing her into the pit again and again?
Mallory's eyes instantly turned red. She dropped the keys and pulled Emily into a fierce hug. "It's not your fault, Mills. Walking away was the right choice. From now on, this place is your home."
Emily buried her face in Mallory's shoulder, her tense body finally softening just a little.
...
Outwardly, Maurice glared at Cole, but in his heart, he was cursing at Emily.
She was just too stubborn, and he had to find a way to bring her back under control.
Just then, his phone rang.
It was the vice president of Sterling Group.
What matter could be so urgent at this hour?
Annoyed, Maurice picked up and said, "Yes?"
On the other end, the vice president's voice was panicked. "Mr. Sterling, bad news! Holton Corporation just pulled out of every single one of our projects! And our biggest investor backed out too!"
Maurice's breath hitched. "What did you just say?"
