Cedric stared, completely taken aback. Sixteen years old?
In their circle, Jessa was admired for more than just her looks. She’d always been the top of her class, with a degree from one of the best universities around. Honestly, you could search all of Rockford Bay’s high society and still not find anyone who could hold a candle to her academic record.
She was the perfect match for someone like David.
Just being pretty wasn’t enough in their world. If you wanted to stand out, you needed both looks and brains. The higher up you went in their social scene, the more everyone cared about degrees and diplomas.
Whatever little bit of sympathy Cedric had felt for Ella vanished in an instant. He sneered, his words dripping with disdain. “Ella, did you seriously quit school at sixteen?”
Ella glanced over at Jessa, who was practically glowing with pride, and gave a relaxed, easy smile. “Yeah. I really did stop going to school at sixteen.”
Cedric let out a loud, mocking laugh. “Well, isn’t that something. David quit school at sixteen, too, but he’s a real prodigy. He had two master’s degrees from Harvard by that age. He made history. You, on the other hand, probably didn’t even get your high school diploma.”
His laughter rang out, sharp and mean.
Jessa looked down her nose at Ella, acting like she was above it all.
None of them thought much of Ella.
David stood nearby, tall and composed. The hallway lights cast a soft glow over his sharp, distant features as he looked Ella’s way.
For three years, Ella had just been a housewife, always putting him first. No one was surprised she didn’t have a degree.
But Ella didn’t look embarrassed or flustered. Instead, her clear eyes met his, bright and full of life. She offered a gentle, almost playful smile. “Yeah. It really is a coincidence.”
It really was a coincidence.
For some reason, David felt something stir in his chest, just for a second.
He suddenly noticed how beautiful Ella’s eyes were, how much expression and spark they held.
“Ella!” Fiona rushed over, her face darkening when she spotted Jessa. “Jessa, are you picking on Ella again?”
Jessa answered, chin held high. “We weren’t picking on her. We were just trying to help Ella find a job.”
Fiona looked at her like she’d lost her mind. “You’re going to help Ella get a job?”
