“I sold everything just to send her to school, gave up everything so she could make it in the city. And now she acts like she doesn’t even know me. She says I embarrass her, tells me to just go back to the countryside…”
Mike cried so hard, even he almost believed his own story. It was honestly an Oscar-worthy performance.
The reporters snapped away with their cameras, all of them eager to cover the drama of an adopted daughter dumping her rural father. This was the kind of story that got clicks, and everyone wanted their exclusive.
They all looked at Mike with sympathy, turning on Ella without hesitation. “How could Ella be so heartless?”
“I never thought anyone could be born bad, until Ella came along.”
Cedric handed Mike a tissue, face burning with righteous fury. “We called this press conference to show everyone who Ella really is. Too many people still don’t know the truth. She can’t just throw her father away. She has to take responsibility.”
Mike dabbed at his face with the tissue, barely hiding the sly smile that flickered across his lips. No matter how hard David tried to protect her, Ella was never getting away from him.
Rachel and Jessa shared a look, both of them looking smug and satisfied.
Peter didn’t bother to show up. He was sure the press conference would be enough to ruin Ella. He was out at dinner with some business partners, just waiting for Rachel to bring him good news.
Rachel put on her best heartbroken face. “Everyone, I just want to apologize. Ella is my daughter. I failed as her mother, and I’m sorry for all the trouble she’s caused. I know I haven’t been a good mom.”
Jessa jumped in, grabbing Rachel’s hand. “Mom, it’s not your fault.”
The reporters were quick to comfort Rachel. “Mrs. Irvine, it’s not on you. You did your best with Ms. Irvine.”
“Mrs. Irvine, Ella must just be bad by nature. Some people can’t be changed.”
Rachel let a tiny, secret smile curl on her lips. She’d just built herself up as the perfect mom, right on Ella’s back.
Cedric spoke up, loud and dramatic. “The press conference has started, but where’s Ella? Looks like she’s too scared to show her face. She knows she’s guilty.”
He barely finished the sentence before a cool voice cut through the room. “Mr. Grimm, are you talking about me?”
