They lost this press conference, and lost it badly.
Rachel turned to Ella right away. “Ella, I’m so sorry. Please, let me explain. I didn’t know anything…”
Ella met her mom’s eyes. “You really didn’t know?”
Before Rachel could answer, a police officer stepped forward. “Rachel, while Mike was on the run, you hid him. We suspect you worked with him. Please come with us for questioning.”
Two officers took Rachel by the arms.
Her mind buzzed with panic. She remembered it all too well. When Mike showed up, desperate and on the run, she had let him stay.
Rachel stared at Ella, shocked. “Was it you?”
Ella was the one who tolf Aiden to release Mike. She had known exactly where he’d go.
Ella just looked at her, innocent as could be, and gave a small smile. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Mom. You don’t need to explain anything to me. Save it for the police.”
Rachel’s face twisted. “You—!”
Suddenly Mike, being dragged away, screamed out, clinging to his last hope. “I don’t want to go to jail! Mrs. Irvine, help me! Please, save me!”
In an instant, every eye in the room turned to Rachel. The whispers started flying.
Her perfect “good mother” image was falling apart right in front of her.
Rachel’s face turned pale. “Shut him up! Somebody make him stop talking!”
Reporters were already murmuring. “That scumbag Mike was in prison for child molestation. No way Mrs. Irvine didn’t know.”
“She knew, and she still stayed close to a man who hurt her own daughter? What kind of mom does that?”
“Honestly, Mrs. Irvine’s just a desperate bootlicker. She would do anything Peter and Jessa tell her to.”
Ella smiled. “If you’re thirsty, go drink some milk. It’s good for your brain.”
Then she turned and walked away.
Fiona snorted, trying not to laugh, and followed Ella out.
Cedric finally realized what she meant. Was she telling him to go get smarter? Did she think he was dumb?
Any guilt he felt disappeared. He bristled with anger. “Ella, come back here and say that to my face!”
Jessa hurried over to him. She couldn’t lose Cedric too. Her voice was small and shaky. “Cedric, I don’t even understand what just happened. How could Mike be that kind of person?”
Cedric’s expression turned cold and disgusted. “Don’t mention that bastard to me. He’s not getting out of prison. He can rot in there. Jessa, don’t blame yourself. You’re a good person. You just got fooled.”
Cedric was still on her side, and Jessa finally felt herself relax a little.
