David had been losing all night, and his sharp, good looks seemed even colder in defeat.
Jessa sat at his side, watching the game. A platter of fresh fruit rested beside her. She reached out, picked the biggest, juiciest grape, peeled it with nimble fingers, and held the glistening fruit to David’s lips.
He didn’t even look away from his cards. He just opened his mouth so she could feed him.
Jessa cuddled up to him, soft and sweet, and even held out her palm to catch the grape seed when he spit it out. She looked every bit the doting girlfriend, fussing over David’s every need.
The two rich heirs at the table burst out laughing. “Only Mr. Harmon could get Rockford Bay’s prettiest girl to take care of him like that.”
“Guess it’s true what they say. Lucky in love, unlucky at cards. No wonder he keeps losing tonight.”
Jessa pouted, her voice playful. “You just love picking on me.”
From the doorway, Ella watched everything unfold. She had never seen David bring Jessa out to play cards with his friends before. A sharp ache twisted in her chest.
David lost again. He tossed his cards onto the table, then shoved his chips forward. “Split it up. I’m out.”
Cedric and the two heirs grinned, practically glowing. “Thanks, David. You’re too generous,” Cedric called out.
David’s on a roll tonight, just burning through his cash,” one of them joked.
David didn’t react. He just leaned back in his chair, looking bored and tired of it all.
Jessa gazed up at him with stars in her eyes. “Are you tired, David?”
“I think he’s just bored,” Cedric said, grinning.
“Maybe Jessa should give David a little excitement,” another heir teased, sending everyone into a fit of laughter.
Jessa smiled, her lips curving up. She poured a glass of wine and turned to David. “Do you want a drink?”
