Ella spotted Sarah lounging on the sofa, laughing and joining in with everyone else. She looked like she was having the time of her life.
“David, Jessa,” Sarah called out with a mischievous grin, “since everyone’s in such a good mood, let me tell you a joke.”
Jessa perked up, curiosity in her eyes. “What kind of joke?”
“It’s about Ella!”
Out in the hallway, Ella froze for a second. Of course. Just when she thought she’d managed to stay out of the spotlight, someone always dragged her right back in.
Sarah raised her voice for effect. “Today was Ella’s first day at Central College, and she already made a name for herself.”
Cedric rolled his eyes. “Come on. Ella? Seriously?”
Sarah just laughed. “Yeah, really. She’s officially our Sleep Queen. She slept through the entire first day!”
Everyone burst out laughing, the sound echoing off the walls.
Cedric was the loudest. “Now I get it. David sent her to Central College just so we’d have a new joke every day. Never a dull moment with her around. This is great.”
The laughter got even louder, and Jessa looked the most pleased of all, her eyes shining with satisfaction.
Ella stood outside the door, silent.
Whatever, she thought. So happy to bring you some fun.
Inside the fancy suite, David didn’t laugh with the rest. A moment ago, Jessa had almost managed to cheer him up, but hearing everyone make fun of Ella made his face turn cold.
He pulled his arm back from Jessa’s chair, suddenly tense.
Something caught his attention. He glanced toward the door, his sharp eyes searching for someone.
The hallway was empty.
Ella was already gone, pulling Lilly away with her.
David stood up and started to leave.
