Ella stared at the counselor, completely stunned. “Wait, counselor, I think you called the wrong person…”
Her words faded away as someone blocked her view. David was suddenly right in front of her, his presence casting a heavy shadow that seemed to swallow her up.
His eyes, sharp and cold, slid over to Lilly, then landed on Ella. “Who started the fight? Step forward.”
The anger in his voice made Lilly shrink back, her confidence evaporating. She reached out and gave Ella a little push.
Ella stumbled forward and ended up crashing right into David’s chest. It was as hard as a wall, and since he was still in his suit from some high-level meeting, his aura was so strong and intimidating that she almost bounced off him.
A blush crept up Ella’s cheeks. Right then, she wished she had eyes in the back of her head so she could shoot Lilly a glare. Total traitor.
Ella’s head was level with his heart. David looked down at her. “Stand up straight.”
“Okay.” She quickly stepped back to put some space between them.
He didn’t let up. “Chin up.”
Ella obediently lifted her head.
David’s brow tightened. Ella looked like she’d been through a war. Her hair was a tangled mess, her pale cheeks streaked with dirt, and there were rips in her clothes. She and Lilly had managed to pin Wesley down, but he was stronger than both of them. Now, standing in front of David, she looked a little lost, a little vulnerable.
When she looked up at him, her eyes were clear and bright, almost like a kitten’s under the moonlight.
The lecture David had ready seemed to get stuck in his throat.
The counselor came over, looking apologetic. “Mr. Harmon, sorry to pull you here, but this fight involving Ella and Lilly is a big deal. The Ross family is furious. They want Ella expelled. What do you think we should do?”
