Ella slipped backstage, grateful for the peace. She had asked Alberto to clear the area earlier, so now it was just her, alone with her thoughts.
She settled in front of the makeup mirror and pulled her silky dark hair into a low ponytail, baring her slender neck. With careful hands, she brushed on a light layer of makeup, finishing with a touch of lipstick. She rarely bothered with makeup. Her features were already soft and capitivating. Still, the hint of color made her look even more breathtaking.
A voice echoed from outside. Mr. Lynch, always energetic, greeted the crowd. “Good morning, everyone.”
Ella stood and peeked out from behind the curtain. The lecture hall looked like a sea of heads, every seat packed, not a single empty spot in the thousand-seat room. TV crews were everywhere, cameras snapping nonstop.
Mr. Lynch stood at the podium, speaking into the mic. “Good morning, everyone. Today, we’re all here for…”
The whole crowd shouted together, “Doctor E!”
He grinned. “That’s right. We’re so honored to welcome Doctor E to Central College for today’s lecture.”
Ella scanned the audience and spotted David right in the front row. He sat straight and tall, his face serious and sharp. To his left were Jessa and Maureen, and to his right sat the vice principal and a few department heads. No matter where he went, David always seemed to command the room.
Mr. Lynch was almost bouncing with excitement. “Now, let’s give a big welcome to Doctor E!”
It was her cue.
Ella had been gone for three years, hidden away as Mrs. Harmon. Now, she was about to step back into the world as Doctor E. She could only imagine the looks on David’s, Jessa’s, Maureen’s, and Sarah’s faces when they saw her on stage.
This was going to be good.
She took a breath and got ready to walk out. Just as she moved forward, a sudden pain shot through the back of her neck. Something heavy struck her. Her vision blurred, then everything went black as she crumpled to the floor.
…
David sat in the main seat at the front. Jessa leaned in, whispering excitedly, “David, we’re finally going to see Doctor E.”
He couldn’t believe it.
Wesley had taken her? Just days ago, it was that psycho Mike, and now it was Wesley, the notorious playboy. How did Ella keep getting herself into these situations with men?
Frustration and worry twisted in his chest. This girl gave him no peace.
Lilly was still talking, her voice urgent. “You need to find her fast. I think Wesley is actually into her. If you’re slow, your wife will become someone else’s.”
She was almost out of breath from running, desperate to warn him.
David was silent, his mind racing.
He ended the call. Aiden came up beside him. “Boss, do you want me to lock down the city again, like last time?”
