Maureen grinned, brimming with confidence. “Grandma, this is just the beginning. I’m only going to go further from here.”
Grandma Jill was practically glowing with pride. She knew her granddaughter was something special. With Maureen leading the way, the Irvine family would finally have the recognition it deserved.
Logan and Ruby looked at each other, beaming. The more accomplished Maureen became, the brighter her future looked. Maybe she’d even marry into an influential family one day.
Just then, Grandma Jill caught sight of Ella standing at the back. Her smile faded. “Ella, why are you here?”
Ella had arrived too, but the family was too caught up in their celebration to notice her.
Maureen glanced back at her. “Grandma, I invited Ella. She wanted to come see what it was like. It’s fine, let her stay.”
Grandma Jill clearly wasn’t happy about it. In her eyes, Maureen and Jessa were the ones who made the family proud. Ella only ever embarrassed them.
Honestly, she’d never really seen Ella as her granddaughter.
Still, since Maureen had spoken, Grandma Jill turned to Ella, her tone sharp. “Fine. But you’d better behave. Don’t touch anything, understand? If you break or dirty anything, you’ll have to answer for it.”
The words stung, especially coming from her own grandmother, but Ella just smiled quietly and didn’t say a word.
“Maureen!”
A group of students from Central College hurried over, faces bright with excitement. They practically idolized Maureen, and had even asked for her autograph the day before.
Maureen’s face lit up. “Hey, what are you doing here?”
The students crowded around her, leaving Ella pushed into the far corner. “Maureen, today’s your public paper exhibition. We had to come and cheer you on.”
“You make us all so proud.”
“Let’s grab a photo, yeah?”
Everyone positioned themselves in front of Maureen’s paper. She stood in the middle, Grandma Jill, Logan, and Ruby gathered to her left, her classmates to her right.
Maureen let out a shaky breath, too stunned to move.
The students started whispering, eyes wide. “No way… Dr. E actually found mistakes in Maureen’s work.”
“Her paper just got rejected by the institute.”
“This is so embarrassing. Maureen messed up right in front of Dr. E and everyone here.”
Suddenly, her classmates couldn’t get away fast enough. “Maureen, we’ve got to go. See you around.”
They hurried off, leaving Maureen standing there.
Grandma Jill grabbed her arm. “Maureen, what’s going on? Tell me the truth.”
All the confidence and joy vanished from Maureen’s face, replaced by shock and panic. Her paper had two mistakes, and Dr. E had called them out. The institute had taken her work down in front of everyone. It wouldn’t be long before all of Central College found out. Her big moment of glory had turned into a complete disaster.
