David reached out and caught her before she could fall.
He glanced down, his handsome eyes narrowing in irritation. “Ella, why are you back?”
Ella hadn’t expected to find him home. He was fresh from outside, dressed in a sleek black suit that looked expensive, the fabric still holding a touch of the night’s cool air.
Her whole body was burning up. Instinctively, she pressed herself closer, hoping his cool, calm scent might help smother the heat swirling inside her.
She looked up at him, eyes shining and desperate. “David, please… help…”
Before she could finish, David stepped back, pushing her away. His voice was cool and distant. “What’s going on?”
For a second, Ella just stared at him, stunned. She’d actually thought about asking David for help. What was she thinking? He’d never help her.
“I was drugged.” Her voice was small, shaky.
He frowned, his brow knitting with frustration. She was always finding new ways to get herself into trouble.
“Wait here.”
David strode over to the window. He pulled out his phone and dialed, loosening his tie with one hand. The tie hung loose around his neck, giving him an air of effortless charm that was hard to ignore.
Ella looked away, not daring to meet his gaze.
The call connected. Cedric’s voice came through. “David.”
“I need some advice. If a woman’s been drugged, what should I do?”
Cedric immediately burst out laughing. “Seriously? Is it Jessa? Come on, man, just go handle it yourself.”
David’s voice sharpened. “I’m serious.”
Cedric sighed. “Not Jessa, huh. Well, have her take a cold shower. It’s rough, but if she gets through it, she’ll be fine. If not, it could get dangerous.”
David hung up, then turned to Ella. “Can you handle a cold shower by yourself?”
