David stood on the balcony in a pair of black silk pajamas, a cigarette balanced between his slender fingers. Smoke curled around his face, making it hard to read his expression, but the tension in his furrowed brow said everything. He was smoking fast, letting the ashes fall with a kind of frustrated energy.
He felt like he was losing his mind.
There was nothing wrong with the suite. He told the resort manager to say otherwise. He just couldn’t stand the idea of Ella and Atlas sharing a room. The moment he heard she’d ordered condoms and lingerie, he couldn’t stop picturing what she and Atlas might be doing together. It was driving him insane.
In the quiet of the night, David finally admitted to himself just how deep this obsession with Ella ran. The idea of her with another man was unbearable.
He didn’t love her. Not really. But he couldn’t let go of the way she made him feel. It was supposed to be casual, just for fun, but he wasn’t done with her yet. There was no way he could stand to see her move on to someone else.
Someone slipped their arms around him from behind. “David, what’s going on? Why are you smoking?”
It was Jessa. She almost never saw him smoke.
David turned to face her, but before he could say anything, the bathroom door opened and Ella stepped out, fresh from her shower.
Atlas walked over. “Hey, Ella, all done?”
She nodded. “Yeah.”
Ella glanced toward the balcony, catching sight of David and Jessa. Jessa’s arms were still around him, and David was still holding his cigarette. They looked close. Almost like nothing had happened. After everything he’d said to her, he was already back with Jessa.
Ella looked away. “I’m going to dry my hair.”
Ella’s face went pale.
Atlas frowned. “What’s your problem, David? I offered to help her. Why are you treating her like this?”
David stood tall, his voice cold and commanding. “You have hands. Use them.”
Ella reached for the hair dryer.
But Atlas kept it out of her reach, his eyes fixed on David. “You know, you’re really asking for it. Is that what you want?”
