The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 197

Atlas was doing fine.

The nurse left the room.

Right then, Aiden’s voice drifted in from the hallway. “Sir, you really can’t put this off any longer. Your hand needs to be treated now, or you might lose it.”

Ella glanced up and spotted David standing by the door. He looked as calm and strong as ever; she could tell he’d been there the whole time.

Aiden turned to her, his eyes almost begging. “Ma’am, he’s still bleeding. Please, just say something.”

Ella looked down and saw the blood on the floor. That wasn’t just a cut. He’d need a lot of stitches.

She stood and headed toward the door.

When David saw her come closer, something in his eyes brightened, like hope flickering back to life.

Aiden let out a relieved breath. “I knew you still cared about him. Sir, you should get that hand looked at…”

Before he could finish, Ella calmly reached out and shut the door right in their faces.

The sharp click echoed in the hallway.

Aiden stared at the closed door, stunned into silence.

The light faded from David’s eyes. He peeked through the small window and watched as Ella went back to Atlas' bedside. She took his hand, rested her head beside him, and fell asleep right there.

David’s lips curled into a wry, self-mocking smile.

...

A week passed. Atlas had woken up and was recovering well.

He dropped his keys on the table and met her disappointed look. “She’s busy with school. If you miss her, you could just call and ask her over.”

Grandma Chelsea didn’t hesitate. She picked up the living room phone. “I’ll do that right now.”

David sat on the couch and grabbed a business newspaper, pretending to read.

The call went through quickly. Ella’s soft, clear voice filled the room. “Grandma.”

Grandma Chelsea’s voice lit up again. “Ella, you must be busy these days. You haven’t come to see me at all. I had the kitchen make all your favorite dishes tonight. Come home and eat with me.”

A maid came over and set a cup of tea next to David. “Your tea, sir.”

He didn’t even glance up, lost in his own thoughts.

Ella’s voice came through the line again, gentle and apologetic. “Grandma, I’m really sorry. A friend of mine is in the hospital and I promised to stay with him tonight, so I can’t have dinner with you.”
