“Is this incense for Mr. Harmon and Ms. Jessa’s room?”
“Yeah, it’s what Mrs. Irvine wanted. It’s not just any incense, either. It’s the aphrodisiac kind.”
“So tonight’s the night, huh? Looks like something big is finally going to happen between them.”
“Just watch. Ms. Jessa is going to be Mrs. Harmon before you know it.”
“That’s not even all. Doctor E is staying over with Maureen tonight, too. Grandma Jill has been grinning all evening. Those two guys are her absolute favorites.”
“Trust me, the Irvine family is about to have some really good days ahead.”
The two maids wandered off, their voices fading down the hall.
Ella had caught every word. They were planning to use aphrodisiac incense on David? Last time, they’d tried something similar, but the effects were mild and David fought it off. This incense sounded way stronger, the kind you couldn’t even buy easily. Grandma Jill and Rachel must really be getting impatient.
Should she warn David?
She hesitated. It wasn’t really her place to get involved. David had always loved Jessa. Maybe the incense was just a way to help them along.
Ella cast one last look at the Irvine mansion, shining and full of laughter, a world completely separate from hers. Then she turned and slipped away into the thick, chilly night.
...
Inside, a maid brought the incense into the room. Jessa was sitting on the bed, and David handed her a glass of water.
“Feeling any better?” he asked.
Jessa nodded. “Yeah, a lot better. David, my heart’s been acting up these past few days. I’m so glad we found Doctor E. He’ll fix me up soon.”
David’s face was hard to read. “Was it Maureen who found him?”
“Yeah. David, do you think Doctor E might be a fake?”
Something was wrong.
He realized instantly and yanked the door open.
Peter and Rachel were waiting right outside.
“Mr. Harmon,” they greeted him, trying to smile.
David’s look was ice cold. “Did you do something?”
They couldn’t hide it. “Mr. Harmon, we…”
He shot them a glare that made them flinch and started to walk away.
“Mr. Harmon!” Rachel called after him, panic in her voice. “There’s no antidote for that incense. You can only work it off… together. If you leave, what should Jessa do?”
