Ella’s mind buzzed with disbelief. Did he really just say he could find her another man, maybe even two?
He had made his choice.
No hesitation. He picked Jessa.
It felt like someone had shoved a knife deep into her chest and kept twisting, shredding everything inside until she could barely breathe.
Her lips trembled as she tried to speak. “David, I’m still your wife…”
David had already changed into a crisp black shirt and matching pants, every trace of their earlier chaos wiped away. He was back to that cold, untouchable version of himself. He held something out to her. “This is for you.”
Ella glanced down. It was a check with eight zeroes on it.
His cool voice sounded above her. “Ella, this is your divorce settlement. Let’s end this.”
He set the check on the sink, turned, and walked out without looking back.
He was going to Jessa.
Just like her mother had, all those years ago.
Ella’s eyes burned, rimmed with red as tears threatened to spill over. She was being left behind again.
She had tried so hard to hold on to her mom, to David, but they always gave their love to Jessa.
No matter what she did, she could never win.
Not long after, she heard a man talking to Marian outside. “Mr. David sent me. I’m here for Mrs. Harmon. Where is she?”
“In the bedroom,” Marian replied. “Come with me.”
Marian led him closer.
Ella felt the color drain from her face until she was ghostly pale. She never thought David would move this fast. The guy he’d found for her was already here.
Footsteps echoed from the hallway, stopping right outside her door.
A tall, good-looking guy was blatantly checking her out. He slid his arm around her shoulders. “Hey beautiful, it’s been almost half an hour. Your boyfriend’s not coming. Tonight, you’re with me.”
Jessa ignored him, eyes fixed on the countdown on her phone. “Hold on. There are still five seconds left. He’ll come. Five, four, three, two, one…”
As soon as she said “one,” the weight on her shoulder disappeared. The guy’s hand was suddenly caught in a strong grip, and with a quick twist…
There was a sharp crack. The guy’s bone broke.
Jessa turned. David was standing there.
His broad shoulders were dusted with the chill of the night. The guy was screaming in pain as David shoved him away.
The man slammed into the bar, crying out again.
Jessa stood up and slipped her arm through David’s, her smile bright and sweet. “See? I told you my boyfriend would come.”
When it came down to her and Ella, she always knew David would pick her.
