Just then, Ella’s phone started ringing with its cheerful little tune. It was Atlas calling.
“Ella, I’m being discharged today. If you’re not coming, I’ll just leave by myself.”
Ella smacked her forehead. She had completely forgotten that Atlas was getting out of the hospital today.
Without wasting another second, she grabbed her things and hurried out the door.
…
David rushed to the hospital and headed straight to the VIP room, where he found Jessa lying on the bed. The hospital gown practically swallowed her up, and her face was so pale it was almost see-through. She was still unconscious.
David walked quietly over to her bedside. “What happened to Jessa?” he asked, worry tightening his voice.
Peter looked up, his eyes full of accusation. “Mr. Harmon, you left Jessa alone last night. She was so upset she fainted right there and had to be rushed into surgery.”
Rachel, standing nearby, looked just as anxious. “She made it through, but she hasn’t woken up yet.”
Both Peter and Rachel were a bundle of nerves, pacing and watching Jessa anxiously. None of them could believe David had walked out on her like that.
Guilt hit David hard. He couldn’t shake the regret.
Last night, Jessa had tried to pull him down onto the bed, leaning in for a kiss, but all he could think about was… Ella.
He had left Jessa behind at the Irvine estate and gone straight to the hospital to find Ella. He had no idea that, after he left, Jessa would pass out and end up needing emergency surgery.
Suddenly, Jessa stirred. Her eyelids fluttered, and then she slowly opened her eyes.
Jessa’s voice rose in desperation. “David, did you forget your promise to me? You said you’d choose me. If you don’t want me anymore, then what’s the point? I might as well just end everything!” She yanked her blanket off, her movements frantic.
David moved fast, pulling her into his arms. His voice was hoarse. “Nothing happened between me and Ella.”
Jessa froze, then slowly turned to look at him, hope flickering in her tear-filled eyes. “You mean it? Nothing happened with Ella?”
David held her gaze. Jessa was his girl. How could he just walk away from her?
He couldn’t deny it, though. He had been drawn to Ella. He might have even started to fall for her. He’d never said it out loud, but his heart knew the truth.
However, Ella didn’t want him anymore. And he owed Jessa more than this.
David gently wiped the tears from her cheeks. “It’s over between me and Ella.”
