Ella dipped her fingers in the water. It was just warm, not even close to hot.
Her gaze was steady, her eyes clear as she looked straight at Monica. “You pinned this on Fiona, but really, you were aiming at me, weren’t you?”
Monica only gave a little shrug, her smile unbothered. “Yeah.”
Lilly’s anger bubbled over. “Monica, have you lost your mind? Ella has always treated you like a real friend. Did you forget who ran to your rescue at the Royal Hotel when Mr. Johnson tried to assault you? Now you’re a big star and you act like you don’t know us. You even turned around and stabbed us in the back? How could you do this?”
Monica didn’t look the least bit guilty. If anything, she laughed coldly. “So you’re finally saying what you really think. You’re jealous. Both of you. You can’t stand that I landed a rich boyfriend, that I’m the one who made it.”
Jealous?
Lilly just stared, lost for words. “If you’re so proud, why don’t you tell us your boyfriend’s name?”
Ella reached out and gently pulled Lilly behind her. Her eyes stayed on Monica, sharp and thoughtful. “This boyfriend you keep mentioning… do I know him?”
Monica had bragged about her mystery man in front of Ella more than once. It had to be someone familiar.
But Monica just ignored the question.
Right then, her assistant picked up a call and hurried over, whispering something in Monica’s ear.
Monica’s whole face lit up. She looked at Ella, smug and pleased. “Sorry, I don’t have time to talk about Fiona right now. I’m not changing my story. My boyfriend heard I got hurt and he’s coming to pick me up.”
Lilly was fuming. “You—!”
Monica’s whole demeanor changed. She went from untouchable celebrity to a girl with a crush in a heartbeat. Her assistant opened the rear door, and Monica lifted her skirt and slipped inside.
The windows were tinted so dark, nobody could see in, and whoever was inside didn’t step out. The whole thing felt secretive and important.
The car sped away, vanishing into the chilly night, taking Monica with it and leaving Ella staring after them.
Lilly shook her head, puzzled. “Did you see that car? That kind of entrance… Monica really did find herself a powerful backer. I just can’t guess who.”
She reached over for Ella’s hand and gasped. It was cold as ice.
“Ella, what’s wrong? Your hand is freezing.”
