David shot Monica a look. “Get out.”
She stared at him, but he didn’t say anything else. He wanted her out of the car.
A second later, Monica stepped onto the curb. The sleek black car sped off, leaving her in a cloud of exhaust. She coughed and stomped her foot, furious.
…
Ella was already at the Harmon family estate, sitting on the living room sofa and chatting with Grandma Chelsea.
Not long after, the front doors opened. A chilly gust of air swept in as David walked through, tall and sharp in his suit.
“Welcome home, sir,” the maid greeted him.
David swapped his shoes in the entryway, then walked into the living room. He saw Ella right away.
It had been a while since they last saw each other, ever since that day at the campus infirmary. Ella had gotten thinner. The delicate lines of her face made her look even more graceful and distant.
She must have come straight from school. She was still wearing her uniform, a white blouse tucked into a plaid skirt, a jacket thrown over her shoulders. Her long dark hair was pulled up in a ponytail, making her look every bit the sweet, quiet college girl.
David glanced at her but kept quiet.
“David, you’re back. It's dinner time” Grandma Chelsea said with a gentle smile.
They all sat down in the dining room. Grandma Chelsea took the head of the table, with David and Ella sitting across from each other.
A maid brought David a bowl of steaming soup. He took a sip and immediately frowned. “Grandma, what is this?”
Grandma Chelsea grinned. “It’s a special soup with maca, good for your health.”
She went on, “David, do you remember what I said last time? You’re not getting any younger. It’s time for you and Ella to give me a great-grandchild. Drink up. I want to hold one soon.”
David looked at Ella.
Ella lifted her clear eyes to meet his for a second, then turned to Grandma Chelsea. “Grandma, I need to get back to school tonight.”
David was Monica’s secret supporter.
Ella had suspected it for a while. She just never wanted to believe it.
They walked across the lawn toward the car. David finally broke the silence. “What made you come home tonight?”
“Are you free tomorrow?” Ella asked quietly.
“Why?”
“Let’s go to the civil affairs office and get a divorce.”
David stopped in his tracks.
Ella stopped too. She looked at him, her eyes cool and steady. “I want a divorce, David. I don’t want to wait anymore.”
