Ella couldn’t help but laugh. Fiona had been going off about David and Jessa since last night, and honestly, her energy was kind of amazing.
The truth was, Ella had already learned how to pick up her own pieces and heal, even when everything felt like it was falling apart.
She unwrapped a candy and popped it in her mouth. The sugary sweetness spread across her tongue, making her eyes crinkle with a smile. “Fiona, take it easy. We’re past the point of complaining. Time to settle the score.”
Fiona just nodded. She knew what was coming. Ella didn’t mess around when it was time to stand up for herself.
Still, Fiona couldn’t help feeling a little sorry for her friend. She’d seen Ella break and rebuild herself too many times. It had to hurt.
Just then, muffled noises came from the supply closet. Ella set down her book and grinned. “Let’s go. We’ll start with Harold.”
Yesterday, Ella had knocked Harold out and had someone drag him here. Now she led Fiona into the tiny room. Harold was tied up, a wad of cloth shoved in his mouth. When he spotted Ella, he started thrashing like crazy.
Fiona walked over and pulled out the gag.
Harold glared at Ella, his face twisted with anger. “Ella, you actually drugged me? Do you even know who I am? I know Doctor E! Even your mom comes to me for help. You’re just some nobody from the countryside. You should be grateful I ever noticed you. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll just shut up and do what I say.”
Fiona’s hands balled into fists. She was ready to slap him, but Ella held her back.
Ella stepped closer, standing over him. “Did I hear you say you know Doctor E?”
Harold puffed up, full of himself. “Of course. Doctor E is a legend. She’s a miracle worker. People like you will never even get to meet her. But I do. I know her personally.”
Ella’s eyebrow arched. Her lips curled into a teasing smile. “You know Doctor E? Prove it.”
Harold smirked. “Her number’s in my phone. I can call her right here, right now.”
“Go for it,” Ella said.
Turn around?
Harold blinked. That voice... it sounded like it was coming from right behind him.
He gripped his phone and slowly turned his head.
Ella was standing there, phone in hand, her eyes sparkling with amusement. She gave him a little wink and a half-smile. “Congratulations, Harold. Now you really do know Doctor E.”
Harold froze, staring at her in open shock. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
Ella’s dress flowed around her ankles, her expression calm and just a little bit entertained, like she was watching a clown put on a show.
Harold’s knees buckled and he dropped right to the floor in front of her, completely stunned.
