At the Irvine family’s villa, Peter lounged on the living room sofa, eyes fixed on his wife. “Rachel, do you really think Doctor E will see Jessa?”
Rachel smiled, a hint of mischief in her expression. After last night, both Ella and Harold vanished together after being drugged. She was sure things had gone just as planned. Those two probably couldn’t keep their hands off each other.
Once Harold got what he wanted, he’d have no reason to refuse her. Doctor E would be within reach.
“Relax,” Rachel said, her voice full of confidence. “Harold’s coming with good news any minute now.”
She settled herself onto Peter’s lap, winding her arms around his neck. Even after all these years, Peter still looked every inch the successful CEO, handsome and commanding, the kind of man who drew eyes wherever he went. “Honey, I’m the one who got Doctor E involved. Shouldn’t I get some kind of reward for that?”
Peter reached up and playfully squeezed her nose. “Didn’t I reward you last night? Or were you still hungry for more?”
Rachel shot him a teasing look before pulling out a small bottle of birth control pills from her purse. “I don’t want to take these anymore,” she said, her tone suddenly softer. “I want to have a baby. I want to give you a son.”
Peter’s smile faded. For years, Rachel had never gotten pregnant, not because she couldn’t, but because Peter had insisted she take precautions. She’d been popping these pills for as long as she could remember.
She knew how much Jessa meant to him. Jessa was his pride and joy, the one person he’d do anything for.
It’s because she was that woman’s daughter.
Rachel tucked away her bitterness and leaned closer, her voice almost pleading. “Jessa’s grown up now. She’ll be Mrs. Harmon soon. Isn’t it time we had a son of our own?”
Peter didn’t respond. Just then, footsteps echoed in the hallway. Harold had arrived.
Rachel’s eyes brightened, and she slid off Peter’s lap, smoothing her dress. If Doctor E agreed to help, maybe Peter would finally agree to her having a baby.
“Harold, you’re here,” Rachel called, unable to hide her excitement. “Did Ella make you happy last night?”
She was too wrapped up in her own joy to notice the awkward tension on Harold’s face.
He forced a smile. “Yes, it was good.”
