It was her.
It was Ella.
And he had gotten it all wrong.
The memory of how cold he’d been to her, how he’d humiliated her, made him want to punch himself. That day in the school clinic, he’d pinned her down on the bed. She’d stared up at him with tears streaming down her face, whispering how much she hated him. She had looked so hurt, so lost.
David, you’re such an idiot!
His whole body tensed, his jaw tight, but then a crooked smile tugged at his lips, trying to hide everything he was feeling.

Fiona went back to the apartment and slept like a log. The next morning, Ella and Lilly dragged her out for a day of shopping.
The three of them wandered into a mall and found themselves in a cute accessory shop. Ella immediately got distracted by a display of hair clips, all in candy colors. There were pink strawberries, green watermelons, yellow lemons—so bright and fun, they almost looked good enough to eat.
“Ella, you’d look adorable in these. Go for the yellow one,” Lilly said.
“I like the pink one, though,” Fiona chimed in.
Ella was just about to pick one when a familiar voice called out, “Ella, fancy running into you here. Out shopping, too?”
Ella looked up and spotted Monica, who had her assistant trailing behind her, arms loaded with fancy shopping bags.
Lilly groaned under her breath, “Seriously, does she have to show up everywhere? It’s like she’s haunting us.”
Monica looked every inch the celebrity, slipping off her sunglasses as she walked over. “Ella, I actually have some good news I wanted to share.”
Fiona looked at her, eyes wide. “Wait, did you win an Oscar or something?”
Monica’s expression soured. “You—”
But then, just as quickly, she pressed a hand to her chest, doubled over, and started gagging.
Lilly frowned. “Monica, what are you up to now?”
Then, out of nowhere, a low, smooth voice broke the tension. “What are you all doing?”
Ella looked up and saw David walking toward them, tall and handsome as ever.
David was here.
Monica immediately lit up and hurried to his side. “Mr. Harmon, I have some wonderful news to share with you.”
He glanced at her, his face unreadable. “What news?”
“Mr. Harmon, I’m pregnant.”
A hush fell over the group.
David’s lips curled into a faint, almost teasing smile. “Is the baby mine?”
“Yes, it’s from that night. Mr. Harmon, you’re going to be a dad.”
