Monica’s birthday party was buzzing with reporters from all the top media outlets. She was the girl of the moment and everyone wanted a piece of her. She’d hoped this would be her big chance to step up in the industry, but then Hayden showed up and everything went sideways.
In an instant, the room erupted. Flashbulbs went off everywhere, cameras clicking nonstop. Reporters crowded in, shouting questions. “Monica, so you really do have a boyfriend?”
“Is it true you got into college thanks to your boyfriend working construction?”
“So all that innocent ‘Girl Next Door’ image was just an act to trick your fans?”
Monica’s heart pounded. She hadn’t seen this coming at all, and now she could barely hold herself together. “Stop taking pictures! Please, stop!” Her voice shook as she tried to push through the chaos.
She glanced up by accident and caught sight of someone on the second-floor balcony. David stood there, leaning against the carved railing. Even from here, Monica could tell he was watching everything unfold.
Panic gripped her. David was here. He knew about her boyfriend now. He couldn’t find out the rest.
“This party’s over!” Monica spun around, ready to bolt. Her own birthday suddenly didn’t matter; she just needed to get out.
But Hayden reached out and grabbed her arm. “Monica, where are you going?”
“Let go of me!”
He wouldn’t. “How much longer were you going to hide your pregnancy from me?”
Monica froze. The world seemed to stop. How did Hayden know?
She tried to play it off. “What are you even talking about? I don’t know what you mean...”
Hayden pulled a paper out of his pocket and held it up. “This is your hospital pregnancy report, Monica. Are you still going to deny it?”
But Hayden pressed on, his voice echoing above the noise. “Monica, you and I have been together for a long time. You gave me your first time before you even started college. Did you forget?”
This was a nightmare. Monica could feel David’s eyes on her, cold and distant from the balcony above. He was seeing everything. Her secrets. Her fear. The way she was falling apart in front of everyone.
She clenched her fists, desperate. “Hayden, please, I’m begging you. Just stop!”
Finally, Hayden went quiet, but the cameras didn’t. Reporters surged around her, their shouts blending into a wall of noise.
“Monica, are you really pregnant?”
“So she is dating a construction worker and got pregnant before marriage? This is wild.”
“Monica, now that you’re famous, were you just planning to dump the boyfriend who paid your way through college?”
