David looked at her and nodded. “Okay.”
…
They made their way to the hospital and stepped into the VIP room. Jessa lay there on the bed, her skin almost translucent, a breathing mask covering her face. She was still out cold. Thick gauze was wrapped around her right wrist, but bright red blood was already soaking through.
The moment Rachel spotted David, she hurried over. “Mr. Harmon, you’re here.”
But then she stopped in her tracks, her eyes darting to Ella behind him.
Rachel’s expression hardened. “Mr. Harmon, why did you bring her?”
Ella met Rachel’s stare with a calm, unreadable look.
Rachel’s voice started to tremble with anger. “Ella, how can you even show your face here?”
“Last night, Jessa was feeling sick. She wanted Mr. Harmon to stay with her. You knew that, but you still clung to him and wouldn’t let him go. Look what happened. Jessa was so upset she tried to kill herself because of you.
“Are you happy now? Is this what you wanted? You pushed her to this! Just leave. Get out!”
Rachel grabbed a glass of water and hurled it right at Ella.
The glass hit with a sharp thud.
But Ella didn’t feel any pain. Everything went dark for a split second as someone stepped in front of her, blocking the blow.
She looked up. David was standing there, shielding her completely. The glass had smashed against his head. Blood was already running down his forehead.
Ella’s eyes went wide. She never thought he would protect her like that.
Rachel stared, stunned. “Mr. Harmon, you…”
Jessa looked so fragile. She slowly lifted her left hand toward David. “David.”
He took her hand and held it tight.
Rachel started up again. “Mr. Harmon, why didn’t you come last night? Do you know how long Jessa waited for you? She didn’t sleep at all. She waited all night.
“I was so worried about her. Her heart’s never been strong. This morning, I went to warm up some oatmeal for her. When I came back, she was lying there, covered in blood. She cut her own wrist!”
“There was blood everywhere. They had to give her so many stitches. She almost didn’t make it.”
Jessa’s eyes were red and shiny, a mix of pain and accusation swirling in her gaze. Her voice was barely more than a whisper. “David, why didn’t you come last night?”
David looked at Jessa, guilt crashing over him. He’d spent last night with Ella, while Jessa waited for him and ended up hurting herself.
Jessa turned her head, her eyes suddenly landing on Ella. “Why is she here? Make her leave. David, I don’t want to see her! Please, just make her go.”
