The Genius Ex-Wife’s Revenge Portfolio novel Chapter 270

Ella reached out, wanting to brush her fingers over David’s face.

Before she could, he caught her hand in his. David blinked open his sleepy eyes, looking at her with that dazed, early-morning softness. He brought her hand to his lips and pressed a gentle kiss to her knuckles, then turned to meet her gaze. “You’re awake?”

His voice was low and rough, that kind of irresistible rasp that only comes after a good night’s sleep. Those dark eyes of his softened as he looked at her, and for a moment, the world felt quiet.

A rosy blush crept over Ella’s face. “It’s getting late. We should get up.”

David just pulled her closer, tucking her into his arms. “Stay with me a little longer.”

He clearly wasn’t ready to leave the warmth of the bed.

But Ella sat up, slipping away from his hold. “No way. This is the girls’ dorm. If anyone wakes up and sees you here, we’re both dead. You really need to go.”

David’s lips curled into a teasing smile, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “So we spent the night together, and now you’re kicking me out first thing in the morning? Ella, you’re so practical.”

Ella shot him a look, not even bothering to argue. She glared at him, then threw off the covers and slid out of bed.

Her feet hit the floor, but her legs felt wobbly and before she could steady herself, she started to fall. “Ah!” she gasped.

She didn’t hit the ground. David reacted fast, his strong arm wrapping around her waist and lifting her effortlessly into his arms.

He looked down at her, concern flickering in his eyes. “You okay?”

Of course she wasn’t okay, and he knew exactly why. Ella scowled and balled her hand into a fist, giving his chest a soft, half-hearted punch.

Her face was fresh and bare, with a natural flush lingering on her cheeks. She still had a crooked yellow hair clip, clinging to her messy hair. The way she pouted at him, it was so obvious she was blaming him for all of it.

David’s chest rumbled with a low, amused laugh. He looked so pleased with himself, so completely charmed by her little outburst. He’d always loved how genuine and sweet she was, how she made everything feel lighter.

He set her gently back on the bed, then leaned over, eyes glinting with playful challenge. “Still got some fight in you? Maybe we should try a little morning workout.”

He dipped his head, pressing a trail of kisses down her neck.

He grabbed it and answered. On the other end, Rachel’s voice was sharp with panic. “Mr. Harmon, something terrible’s happened. Jessa tried to kill herself. She cut her wrists!”

Jessa tried to kill herself.

Ella’s hand froze around the pendant.

The warmth of David’s body disappeared. He was up and out of bed in an instant, his jaw tight, his whole expression turning sharp. “I’ll be there right away.”

He hung up and started pulling on his clothes, moving fast.

Ella sat on the bed, the pendant still clutched in her hand. She watched him, her heart heavy, then quietly slipped the pendant back under her pillow.

Last night had been perfect, just the two of them, but reality was already crashing in. Jessa had always been the wall between them that she could never get past.

Ella stood up, voice steady. “I’m coming with you to the hospital.”
