Jace didn’t bother to stick around. He just walked away.
Lucas stood there, stunned. Seriously? Jace was really going to ignore him like that?
Lilly couldn’t hold back anymore. “Lucas, what’s your deal? You think you can just challenge people whenever you want? Jace, I’m so sorry. This is all my fault. Wait for me, please.”
She hurried after Jace.
Lucas could barely contain his anger. He snatched up a basketball and threw it hard at Jace’s back.
“Jace, watch out!” Lilly shouted.
The ball hurtled toward Jace, about to slam into him. At the last second, Jace spun around, his hand snapping out to catch the ball in midair as if it was nothing.
He turned, locking eyes with Lucas, then took off toward the basketball hoop.
The whole campus knew what was happening now. Central College’s two most popular guys were really facing off.
Everyone around the court went quiet, holding their breath.
Lucas tried to block Jace, reaching for the ball, but Jace faked left, then slipped right past him, quick and smooth.
Lucas lunged again, desperate to stop him.
But Jace just gripped the ball, sprang up, and soared toward the basket. His black t-shirt lifted just enough to show the cut lines of his abs and slim waist. In one powerful move, he slammed the ball through the hoop. The rim rattled, echoing across the court.
It was ruthless. Perfect. Lucas didn’t even stand a chance.
The girls on the sidelines broke into screams.
“Did you see that? Jace is ridiculously hot.”
“Lucas is always the captain, but it’s because Jace never even played before!”
“He’s so cool, I can’t even handle it!”
A clear voice rang out just then. “Are you okay, Sarah?”
She looked up and saw Ella watching her with a look that said she was enjoying the drama.
And it wasn’t just Ella. All around, people were staring, whispering, pointing. Just an hour ago, Sarah was the center of attention. Now, she was just Lilly’s sidekick, and her big public confession had turned into a punchline.
Sarah had always been at the top of the social ladder at Central College. This kind of embarrassment was a first. She couldn’t handle it. Her eyes filled with tears as she turned and ran.
“Sarah!” Jessa called after her, but it was no use.
Why did everyone have to go? How did everything go so wrong?
Jessa glared at Ella, furious. “Ella, this is all your fault. Why do you always have to mess with me?”
She raised her hand, about to slap Ella.
But before she could, a strong hand reached out and grabbed her wrist, stopping her cold.
